A bizarre call-in to a radio station during a debate about nudists has left listeners bewildered after the caller was accused of putting on a high-pitched voice to speak as his ‘wife’.
Henry Riley, an LBC presenter, took to the studio on Sunday to debate public nudity and nude beaches in the UK and Europe – and had a bizarre interaction with a caller who called himself Clive.
Clive claimed he had been visiting a nudist beach in the UK, Studland Bay in Dorset, for the past 20 years with his wife Cynthia – but Riley wasn’t convinced and suggested Clive was pretending to be a woman, and that his wife wasn’t on the phone at all.
Speaking in a high-pitched voice, ‘Cynthia’ told the radio presenter: ‘Hi I’m Cynthia his [wife] I’ve been going now 20 years with him.’
Riley, immediately sceptical of the voice on the other end of the line, asked Clive to give the phone to Cynthia so they could have a conversation one-on-one.
However as the call unfolded, the exchange became ever more bizarre as Clive failed to put Cynthia on the phone and made excuses about the phone, leaving LBC listeners completely bewildered – and convinced that Cynthia didn’t exist at all.
After a clip of the phone call was posted on X, people expressed their confusion over Clive’s unusual behaviour – and said they too believed he was putting on a high pitched voice and pretending to be a woman.
When Riley asked Clive to put his wife on the phone, he responded: ‘I will try, but the reception is not good, but I can repeat what she’s saying,’ he responded.
The journalist then asked how long Cynthia had been going nude for, to which Clive answered the question for her. Henry then said: ‘I want to hear from Cynthia!’

Clive then said: ‘Sorry, can you hear? It’s the reception I think… okay…’ before the shrill tone then appeared again, with Cynthia then saying: ‘Hi, we’ve been to the [nudist beaches] in Kent as well, sorry about that.’
Henry, clearly puzzled, then said: ‘I’m not being rude here Clive, are you doing a voice for Cynthia? Is Cynthia real? Can you both speak at the same time?
‘I’d quite like you both to speak at the same time if possible.’
Clive was adamant that the signal was poor and even volunteered to speak for his wife before saying ‘she’s a bit nervous’.
The presenter then said: ‘If Cynthia is standing next to you then why can’t you both speak at the same time?’
Clive then said: ‘Do you want to talk at the same time? Or will we be interfering with LBC signal? What do you reckon?’
Henry, eager to hear the husband and wife duo speak in unison, then said: ‘No it will be absolutely fine, I’ve checked.’
Clive then comforted his timid wife live on the air and said: ‘It’s okay darling, don’t get nervous now.’

In a bid to hear them speaking to each other, Henry then requested that Clive ask Cynthia about the last nudist beach she visited.
But instead of putting his wife on, he then decided to respond to the question himself again, which seemingly frustrated Henry.
The LBC host then said: ‘But how is she telling you this? Can you ask her? I’d like to hear Cynthia’s voice.’
Clive said ‘two seconds’ before he asked his wife about the last beach they went to.
Cynthia then responded, however, her voice had drastically changed and was not as high-pitched as before.
She said very quickly: ‘Yes it was really really nice,’ to which a suspicious Henry responded: ‘Cynthia’s voice has changed dramatically.’
Clive then put it down to his wife being ‘either starstruck or very nervous again’.
But listeners to the show were not convinced, with some many airing their thoughts on the peculiar interaction.

A fourth commented: ‘This is comedy gold. Thank you.’
The enormous audience response to the interview isn’t the first time an LBC caller has caused a stir online – albeit for different reasons.
In January, fellow LBC presenter Iain Dale went viral after he branded a journalist a ‘numbskull’ for backing President Trump’s claim that diversity hires were to blame for the deadly Washington plane crash.
After an American Airlines plane with 64 people on board collided in the sky with an Army helicopter, the President blamed air traffic controllers, the helicopter pilots and Democratic policies at federal agencies, without giving evidence for his claims.
Mr Trump claimed to reporters at the White House that the FAA was ‘actively recruiting workers who suffer severe intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative’.
Speaking on LBC the night after the tragedy occurred, presenter Dale spoke to Schlichter, a senior columnist at TownHall.com and author of the book ‘We’ll Be Back: The Fall and Rise of America’.
He began by asking Schlichter about Mr Trump’s comments, saying: ‘On the face of it, some extraordinary remarks from President Trump. What do you take from this?’
Schlichter replied: ‘I love it, I am unreservedly happy that we finally have somebody out there calling it as he sees it. The idea that diversity isn’t behind this?
‘You know, I can jump in my car which I had to hose down to get the ash off of, drive a few miles up north to northern Los Angeles which mostly burned down through the gross incompetence of the diversity hires that run my beautiful state of California. We’re going to dig into this – I am, you know, as somebody conducted…’
Dale then interjected, pointing out that ‘a lot of those firefighters that you’ve just paid tribute to will be from diverse backgrounds.’
But Schlichter was unmoved, replying: ‘Yeah, their leaders are from diverse backgrounds and they were grossly incompetent.
‘When you choose people because you’re checking blocks whether colour or sex or for God’s sake severe psychological disability, you’re going to get losers. Diversity, DEI, all that garbage which we voted unequivocally to get rid of and throw in the dustbin is a disaster.
‘It is an excuse to throw out merit and hire, you know it’s essentially patronage and we’re done with it. We’re not going to do it anymore. He’s absolutely right to say so.’
Dale then asked him what evidence existed that either the pilot of the helicopter or the plane or anyone in the control tower came from a diverse background.
When Schlichter admitted ‘there’s none at the moment’, Dale replied: ‘Well exactly, so why, how can you sit there and blithely support these disgraceful remarks?’
The heated exchange continued until Dale spoke to a producer on air and asked them to end the call, saying: ‘Alright, alright, Chris, can you get this numbskull off our programme please. I never want to speak to him again.
‘He is the kind of person that makes America look ridiculous on the world stage.’
