Moment fuel depot goes up in flames: Two dead and dozens injured after inferno at Italy oil company

This is the moment a fuel depot went up in flames, killing two people and injuring dozens of others after an inferno at an Italian oil company.

The explosion in the central region of Tuscany on Monday and more people are feared missing, authorities said.

The blast demolished an office building, regional environmental official Monia Monni told SKY TG24.

The horror unfolded at an ENI fuel depot north of Florence.

A dark plume of smoke was seen rising into the air. Witnesses who were nearby reported a large bang and tremors.

Flames were quickly contained, preventing the fire from spreading to storage tanks from a loading dock area where the explosion occurred.

Residents were advised to keep their windows closed, but environmental officials later determined that the air quality was safe.

The smoke temporarily interrupted regional train services.

Shocking footage posted on X of the blaze was captioned: A Warehouse 15 mins ago. Absurd bang.’

One of the victims is reportedly a father-of-two in his 50s from Prato. 

Many homes and businesses had shattered windows and the column of smoke was visible for hours throughout the city.

The search for those missing following the explosion has been suspended and will resume tomorrow at dawn.

The president of the Tuscan region said: ‘All of Tuscany is united in grief for the tragedy that happened today,’ Eugenio Giani wrote in a social media post. 

The explosion in Calenzano, on the northern outskirts of the Tuscan capital, occurred in an area where trucks load fuel to be taken to petrol stations. Other depots nearby were not affected.

In a statement, Eni expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and others involved in the accident, and said it was fully cooperating with judicial authorities.
