A white van driver has been banned from the roads after he sped past a pair of horse riders without slowing.

Alarming footage shows Stefan Soloman, 24, come within feet of the equestrians in a country lane on the evening of September 9 last year.

The riders, dressed in high-vis vests, are forced to trot along the edges of the grass verge as the vehicle overtakes them at high speed.

Soloman, from Leeds, West Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to failing to provide details to police after the horse riders submitted video footage and the number plate of the white 2022 Ford Transit van.

He has now been fined £709 and given 14 points on his licence, resulting in a six-month driving ban.

Solomon was sent a letter asking him to give details of who was driving his van, but by October 23 he had still failed to do so.

At Harrogate Magistrates Court, on Tuesday, July 1, he pleaded guilty to failing to provide the details.

Magistrates fined him £709 and gave him 14 points on his licence. Anyone who gets 12 or more penalty points within three years is given an automatic six-month driving ban.

According to the Highway Code, those driving a motor vehicle should pass horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles ‘wide and slowly’ and should slow down to a maximum of 10mph.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: ‘Our area covers 3,200 square miles, with 6,000 miles of roads, many of which are rural, countryside lanes where members of the public ride horses.

‘It is important for motorists to be aware that they must slow down when passing horse riders.

‘Failing to do so could result in a fine, a disqualification – or in the worst case, even a serious or fatal injury.’
