  • Milei ran on a platform of cutting public spending and liberalising the economy
  • Argentina is in the throes of a deep recession, high inflation and employment

Argentina’s new president Javier Milei was seen joining his ‘lioness’ girlfriend Fatima Florez at a gala event for the nation’s wealthiest people just hours after he warned Argentinians that they had no money, and that the economy needed ‘shock’ therapy.

The 53-year-old president held his inauguration in Buenos Aires on Sunday, which was attended by nearly 30 world leaders and representatives, including Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky and Hungary’s Viktor Orban.

Shortly after the all-day event, he was seen attending a showing of Madame Butterfly at the Teatro Colón, an opera theatre often considered among the best in the world that sits less than 10 minutes away from Milei new residence, the Casa Rosada.

The former university professor and economist warned that he would be delivering ‘shock treatment’ to the economy, and has committed to a programme of harsh austerity measures in a bid to cool inflation that was at 143% in October.

On top of this, Argentina’s currency, the peso, is in long-term freefall, poverty levels have soared to 40% and the economy is in a deep recession, IMF data revealed.

‘The bottom line is that there is no alternative to austerity and there is no alternative to shock treatment,’ Milei said during his first speech as president.

‘We know that in the short term the situation will worsen. But then we will see the fruits of our efforts.’

‘There’s no money,’ Milei stated in previous interviews. ‘Fiscal balance is not up for discussion. Any minister who spends more, I will fire him.’

He also wants to reduce the number of ministries from 24 to eight, and has called for the elimination or subsuming of the ministries of education, social development, women, genders and diversity, and health.

One infamous video showed him tearing cards with the names of several ministries from a whiteboard, and throwing them away, saying: ‘The state is not the solution, it is the problem.’

He has taken bizarre stances on a range of issues, including the organ trade. The president said he was in favour of allowing the sale of organs between private parties, claiming: ‘it’s just another market.’

‘If women can have control over their bodies, why not everybody else,’ he also said.

He also says he has no issue with sex work being legal, previously saying: ‘I don’t see anything wrong with paying for sex. It’s a free transaction.’

But he is also a climate change denier, and has on several occasions denied the existence of global warming, claiming the scientific community’s overwhelming acceptance that global warming and climate change are real and man-made problems are the result of socialistic interventions.

In a speech following his dramatic victory, he vowed that the ‘reconstruction of Argentina begins today’ while adding he would ‘drain the swamp’ in reference to stemming the influence of special interests and lobbyists.

A pro-Trump libertarian with no prior government experience and a resume that includes work as a ‘tantric sex coach’ has been elected president of Argentina

As the results were revealed, former President Trump responded with praise for Milei in multiple posts to his Truth Social account Sunday evening, with a twist on his famous ‘Make America Great Again’ catchphrase.

‘Congratulations to Javier Milei on a great race for President of Argentina. The whole world was watching! I am very proud of you. You will turn your Country around and truly Make Argentina Great Again!’

He also posted a photo of Milei posing with the ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ flag, considered a symbol of right-wing libertarian politics, again writing: ‘Make Argentina Great Again!’

A political unknown until a few years ago, Milei was elected to Argentina’s parliament in 2021 as a member of La Libertad Avanza (‘Freedom Advances’).

He prefers to call himself an anarcho-capitalist, which means he’d like to rip up as much government intervention as he can and leave it all to the free market.

‘If I had to choose between the state and the mafia, I would choose the mafia,’ he once said. ‘Because the mafia has codes, the mafia adapts, the mafia doesn’t lie. And above all, the mafia competes.’

His ‘chainsaw plan’ to slash the bloated state includes getting rid of Argentina’s public health and education systems along with shuttering ten out of 18 government departments.

Milei is also so anti-progressive he has repeatedly taken aim – rather bizarrely – at Pope Francis, his compatriot, calling him a ‘f***ing communist’, ‘communist turd’ and the ‘representative of the evil one on Earth’ in brutal social media posts, simply because of his perceived support for ‘social justice’ and policies to help the poor.

‘Jesus didn’t pay taxes,’ Milei famously tweeted.

He has been going out with his girlfriend since 2022, after they met on a hugely popular talk show, two months before she separated from her then-husband.

During the interview, Fatima playfully told the politician: ‘You are too alone for your important role.’

In October, the pair returned to the chat show to confirm that they were dating.

Fatima explained: ‘We started talking on Instagram and we started seeing each other much later.

‘It came very naturally. It was very little by little. I was in Uruguay, working, and we started writing to each other.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Argentina’s new president said: ‘I am very in love’. The pair described their love as ‘exotic’.

Fatima then went on to explain how she officially separated from her husband on her birthday in February – likening it to the historic Battle of San Lorenzo in 1813.

Following the interview, Fatima went on to impersonate her new boyfriend in one of her shows.

Sharing a photo of herself backstage, Fatima – who was wearing a shaggy brown wig and bright blue contacts – wrote: ‘I AM YOUR LIONESS.’
