Nicolas Jarry’s celebrated his fourth-round win at the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday with a pitch invader – his young son Juan.

The Chilean beat Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to book a quarter-final meeting with world No 19 Grigor Dimitrov, who knocked the top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Jarry’s wife, Laura, and their sons, 18-month old Juan and newborn Santiago, were in attendance in Shanghai to cheer him on. 

And as the world No 22 took a breather after winning the match and signed the camera lens, Juan trotted onto the court to join him.

Jarry picked up his son and gave him a hug, before sitting him on his courtside seat, with Juan clearly enjoying the experience and looking unfazed by the new surroundings.

The adorable exchange was captured by the cameras, with the commentators noting Santiago may be following in his father’s footsteps one day.

Tuesday was a special day for Jarry, who turned 28 and reached the quarter-final of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career.

The Chilean received a birthday cake and was serenaded with a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ by tournament staff.

‘I think this is my third or fourth birthday here in Shanghai,’ Jarry told reporters. 

‘Usually I’m alone, very far from Chile, and the time zone are opposite, so usually I don’t have anyone to call, just in the morning or in the night. 

‘So to be able to be with them is very special.’

The 28-year-old also credited his family with inspiring to take his game to a new level. 

‘Since I was able to start a family, I’ve been able to shift the perspective a little bit bigger, greater, more sense of what’s really important,’ he explained.

‘I’m trying to be able to get strong with what it is to have a family, to have more motivation on court, or have a bigger goal than just winning the matches.’

Jarry compiled a decisive 44-17 edge in winners, but admitted he felt the match was slipping away from him after Schwartzman took the second set.

‘I’m very happy to be able to come back after that second set,’ he said. 

‘I was struggling a little bit. I tried to push myself. It’s very tough to play against Diego because of [our] history. 

‘Mentally he is so strong, a great competitor and he makes every ball. You have to work a lot and I’m very happy to overcome it.’
