A tourist cheated death after being smashed into rocks by a wave while posing for a photograph on a dangerous ledge at an Egyptian coastal attraction.

The woman, from China, was visiting the Matrouh Eye scenic area in the city of Mersa Matruh, when the terrifying incident took place.

Footage of the moment, shared on social media on December 7, shows the woman in an orange summer dress sitting on the corner of a ledge near the water as a wave rises behind her.

The foamy wave can then be seen crashing towards her, and eventually over her, as it knocks her down and drags her into the open sea.

Following the ordeal, she told local media that she suffered multiple abrasions to her body and described the experience as ‘very frightening’.

She said that she was lucky not to be seriously injured and would be more cautious when travelling in the future.

The woman added that she had miraculously managed to get back to shore by holding onto a safety rope at the site.

Online users noted that the location did not originally have a rope installed and said she was fortunate it was present.

The Matrouh Eye scenic area is a popular coastal viewpoint in the city of Mersa Matruh on Egypt’s Mediterranean shore, known for its striking rock formations and powerful surf that attracts visitors seeking dramatic seafront photographs.

The spot is often visited for its clear waters and exposed vantage points where waves can crash unexpectedly against the rocks, creating the dramatic scenes that draw crowds but also posing risks for tourists who stand close to the waterline.

It comes after a tourist died earlier this year when she fell from a train in Sri Lanka as she posed for a photograph.

Olga Perminova, 53, was travelling on the legendary Podi Menike rail line in February when she decided to lean out of an open door in a deadly picture opportunity.

According to local reports, the woman smashed into a rock and suffered horrific head injuries after holding onto two rails and hanging her head from the carriage.

And another tourist plunged to his death in a Colombian beauty spot while trying to take a selfie in October last year.

Tobias Fischer, 35, died during his solo hike in the mountains in the Taganga district, northern Colombia, on October 19 near where he was staying in the port city of Santa Maria.

He tried to take a selfie at a viewpoint in the Dumbira forest with the sea in the background when he lost his balance and fell down a ravine.

Last year, research suggested that taking selfies should be considered a ‘public health problem’.
