Married At First Sight UK star Daniel McKee has been mugged and left with a collapsed lung and horrific injuries during a solo trip to Mexico.

The reality star, who appeared on the hit E4 show back in 2021, has been forced to fly home early after the scary incident.

In an Instagram post on Monday he shared images of the gruesome injuries and said: ‘I got mugged in Mexico…

‘They didn’t manage to take anything because I fought back… which in hindsight you should NEVER EVER do as I got hurt… they did however redirect my winter travels for a few weeks which I’m not mad about,’ he penned over the top of the snap.

‘Because I get to hang out with this lovely lot over Christmas.’ – he added as he shared a snap with his family.

He continued as he shared an x-ray snap: ‘I have a wee tear in my lung, a small pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and some very sore ribs.’

Daniel ended his post on a positive note as he wrote: ‘But I am grand. Merry Christmas.’ 

He penned in the main caption of his post: ‘Before you romanticise solo travel, read this. Solo travel isn’t always beach beers, sunsets, and slow mornings by the sea.

‘Sometimes it’s uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s challenging. And yes, sometimes it can feel unsafe. I think it’s only fair to share the full picture, not just the moments that make it to the grid.

‘That said… 95% of the time, solo travel is deeply fulfilling, safe, joyful, and genuinely life-changing. The freedom. The confidence. The clarity. The joy. The highs far outweigh the lows, and I honestly think it’s the contrast that makes it so powerful.

‘Usually, when things go sideways on the road, I keep going. But this time, something told me to go home. Maybe it was the timing, just before Christmas, the injured lung or maybe it was the pull of the McKee fam offering TLC… I think it was all three.

‘So I booked the flight. Now I’m exactly where I need to be: dogs curled up beside me, a fire on, too much chocolate, Christmas films, and my family, back in my childhood home. Not the plan I had.

‘But the one that feels right. I’ll be in Ireland for a couple of weeks, resting and resetting, before I shoulder the backpack again ☺️ Sometimes plans change. And that’s okay.

‘And to the travel pals who showed up when I needed it, thank you. Good people exist everywhere. The solo travel community really is something special.’

Afterwards Daniel said of the split: ‘It is a shame that things didn’t work out for the long term, but that pressure and feeling like you’re letting the community and the fans and everybody that supports you down.

‘I was upset anyway because I was heartbroken. I was in love with Dan and I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t want us to separate but circumstances were that that needed to happen, so having that added pressure was quite intense, and even more so upsetting.’

Dan and Matt married on the show and stayed together for two years after filming, shared the sad news with their fans on Instagram.

The former couple confirmed that they were going their separate ways because they felt that they were ‘better off as friends’. 

Sharing the news to Instagram, Dan said: ‘Hey guys! As you all know, we have been on an incredible adventure together the last two years and we have given ourselves every opportunity to make things work as a couple, but over the last few months we have realised that we are actually better as friends.’ 

He continued with: ‘Break-ups are never easy, even when amicable, but we can’t thank you enough for your support and kindness following our journey together.’ 

However, even though the couple split, Dan quickly reassured fans that there is no bad blood between him and Matt.

‘There’s nothing but love and good energy between us, and we feel very lucky to have found each other in our lives. Just sadly not as a couple! And although we are parting ways, we will always continue to support one another.’
