A second person has been charged with the murder of an 18-month-old girl on the Isle of Wight.

Adrian Lawton, 31, of Newport, is accused of murdering and causing or allowing the death of Jayla-Jean McLaren and will appear at Southampton Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

It comes after Samara Glover, 27, appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court last week facing charges of murdering the infant. She also faces one charge of causing or allowing the death of a child.

She was remanded into custody ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing on March 23, as a provisional trial was set for June 29.

Jayla-Jean died in hospital on August 3, 2025, after suffering serious injuries two days earlier, Hampshire Constabulary said.

In a statement previously issued through police, the girl’s family said: ‘Mummy, daddy, and nanny will always love you. Fly high princess.’

Speaking about the case, Detective Chief Inspector Gemma Hunter said: ‘We understand that cases such as this are incredibly concerning and upsetting.

‘However, we kindly ask that you do not speculate on this case, as it could potentially impact any future court proceedings.

‘We will provide further updates on this investigation when appropriate.’
