Colin Firth and his on-screen wife Laura Linney were caught up in a full-scale domestic row in dramatic scenes from their new film The Joy Of Sex.

Hollywood actress Laura, who plays Ruth, was spotted launching her husband Alex Comfort’s (Firth) clothes and possessions out of the window of their home.

Colin was stood below an open window being pelted with items ranging from shirts to books, as filming continued on the adaptation in the UK this week.

The film tells the story of the relationship between Alex, Ruth and her best friend Jane Henderson (Julianne Moore), and their unconventional ‘throuple’.

The intertwined relationship, which took place in the quiet suburbs of north London, lasted ten years before Alex divorced his wife to be with Jane.

Alex and Jane’s marriage was described as ‘peaceful but not especially passionate’, while his romance with Ruth inspired a lot of his love-making manual.

The 1972 book by the British physician and author is a well-known illustrated guide about adult sexual relationships and sexual health.

The ‘funny and erotic’ book, was deemed to reinvent sex for the regular couple and ‘give them permission to enjoy sex for the first time’. 

The astonishing story is being made into a film under the working title Comfort And Joy, which is being directed by Bridget Jones director Sharon Maguire.

The dramatic new scenes outside Colin’s character’s home, show Laura unceremoniously throw his belongings out into the front garden in front of him.

Colin, dressed in a white striped shirt with a brown tie and dark tweed suit, shielded his head with his arms from the items dropping below.

Meanwhile, Laura was visible from the open window, wearing a red blouse and a pearl necklace.

Filming began earlier this summer where Colin reunited with his Love Actually co-star Laura, 62.

The Comforts married in 1943, three years before she gave birth to their son Nicholas.

Julianne, 65, portrays Jane, a librarian who became Comfort’s lover and collaborator in cataloguing the choreography of their sexual adventures.

Discussions for the movie began nine years ago. Comfort’s son Nicholas, a former government special adviser and journalist who holds the rights for the film, has given it his blessing and is acting as a consultant.

He has been on set for much of the filming so far and told The Mail on Sunday: ‘I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.’

While Alex enjoyed having the two women as lovers, they were unhappy in the love triangle which inspired The Joy Of Sex.

The sex manual is structured like a cookbook with sections labelled ‘starters’, ‘main courses’ and ‘left–overs’. 

It combined an open, sex-positive tone of writing with detailed line drawings and colour paintings of a man and woman engaged in sexual activity.

The book – years ahead of its time – features oral sex and exotic sex positions as well as more outlandish practices such as sexual bondage and swinging.

For many years, while Alex conducted his practical research for the book with mistress Jane in his north London home, he divided his time between the two women.

He would spend Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with Jane and the other four days with Ruth.

He and Jane, then in their 50s, took polaroids of their bedroom exploits. 

Alex had hoped that they would be used for his book but the publishers were unimpressed with their snaps. And photographs of explicit acts at the time crossed the line into obscenity and pornography.
