They may have been named after notorious London gangsters, but these Kray-nines looked more playful than perturbing as they celebrated their first birthday. 

Police pups in training Reggie and Ronnie joined the Devon and Cornwall Police dog unit in December 2025 when they were just 13 weeks old.

Since then the pair – believed to be the only Rottweilers training as general-purpose police dogs in the UK – have been put through the paces to follow commands, track scents and take down suspects.

They were named after identical twin gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray, who were involved in murder, armed robbery, arson, protection rackets, gambling and assaults throughout the 1950s and 1960s before finding themselves behind bars.

But unlike their namesakes, the puppies are more than happy to be in charge of The Fur-m while remaining on the right side of the law.

On Tuesday, the twins took time out from their schedule to don colourful birthday hats and bibs to mark their special occasion.

Over the last year, the brothers have grown into large dogs, with Reggie weighing around 37.5kg and Ronnie tipping the scales at 38.1kg. 

The force’s canine development officer, Paul Glennon, told the BBC earlier this year that Ronnie had shown ‘fantastic tracking abilities’.

He added: ‘We wanted to pick a name that was going to join them together and people would take notice of them, so that’s the main reason.

‘Unlike the originals, these guys hopefully are going to be dealing with bad guys and bringing them to book.’

Reggie and Ronnie will spend around 14 months in training before being transferred to their handlers for a three-month course.

If they make the grade, the twins could expect to serve until they turn eight years old.
