A man who allegedly stuffed packs of meat down his trousers at a petrol station shop has been charged with shoplifting.
Police said that CCTV showed Haydon Lucas, who has been dubbed the ‘Sausage Smuggler’, repeatedly visiting a BP in Newbury, Berkshire, and stealing almost £600 worth of meat.
Lucas, 30, has been charged with four counts of shoplifting, returning weekly at first and then twice within four days.
After being arrested on October 6 following an investigation led by the Newbury Neighbourhood Policing team, he has been freed on bail.
He is due to appear at Slough Magistrates’ Court on November 5.
Police said that CCTV showed Haydon Lucas, who has been dubbed the ‘Sausage Smuggler’, repeatedly visiting a BP in Newbury, Berkshire, and stealing almost £600 worth of meat.
Thames Valley Police said: ‘Some criminals think outside the box. This one thought inside the trousers.
‘After repeatedly stealing meat products from BP London Road, Newbury, a suspect was arrested following enquiries by officers.
‘CCTV showed packs of sausages being concealed down clothing before leaving without payment, taking ‘handling stolen goods’ to a whole new low.
‘Turns out there are easier ways to get yourself on a police social media page.
‘The combined value of the stolen goods across the four offences was £594.75. We’ll let you know once the Smuggler has his day in court!’
