Man City embraced their shame and laughed in the face of English football, no one knows whether their emphatic 3-0 win at Anfield matters. For now cheats do prosper, writes OLIVER HOLT

Manchester City delighted in a delirious dance with their own notoriety at Anfield on Sunday evening. The team belonging to the club branded the biggest cheats in English sporting history embraced their shame and laughed in the face of the scorn of the rest of football.

On the occasion of their first public outing since they were found guilty by an independent commission of 114 charges of financial chicanery, City defied the revulsion that has been visited upon them and waltzed past Liverpool, the team which suffered most from their cheating, with a comprehensive 3-0 victory. It was another bad day for a game reeling from what City have done to it.

The win restored their three-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the table and extended their record at the start of this season to six successive triumphs but as the football world waits to see whether their appeal succeeds or what their punishment will be, no one knows whether that matters or whether it is utterly meaningless.

Maresca: ‘We need to learn how to deal with the noise because the noise’

Man City boss Enzo Maresca has said his side will need to deal with the noise at all of their matches from now on, but believes it can create ‘togetherness’ at the club.

Very difficult circumstances, difficult environment. We struggled first half, we were on the ball but not so much off the ball,’ Maresca told Sky Sports.

Second half we made some adjustments and we were much better. In the build-up we were not doing the right things, second half we were better. I’m happy.

We need to learn how to deal with the noise because the noise will be with us at all of our away games – there will be noise.

We need to deal with that and make our noise. Our noise is to win games. The feeling at the end of the game with our fans and our noise, that’s a nice feeling and a different noise.

I came here with City once before in the Treble season. It was nice to play this kind of game for the noise, the environment. We need to make our noise and deal with their noise.

It can create togetherness with the fans. I said during the week bring the passion, bring the noise and hopefully we can celebrate a win. This is the only thing we can focus on.

Neville: ‘This is really bad for the Premier League – people will be thinking this is a sham league’

Gary Neville has admitted it was tough to commentate on Manchester City today in the wake of the guilty verdict.

The Sky Sports pundit claimed today’s match has confirmed to him that the uncertainty over Man City’s situation is ‘really bad’ for the Premier League.

It is quite difficult. It does feel like when you are watching them, we should be eulogising about them, but there is that thing in the back of your mind,’ Neville said.

At the end of the game it is hard.

You are imagining if the verdicts are confirmed, they will not be in the position they are in.

This is really bad for the Premier League, this is something that today has confirmed to me.

The word sham was used a lot. People will be thinking this is a sham league. Liverpool fans chanted cheats at Man City players and ‘going down’ to a team top of the league.

It is damaging right now.

‘Maresca dealing with a desperately difficult situation as well as anybody could’

OLIVER HOLT AT ANFIELD:

Enzo Maresca has just spoken at his press conference. I’ve never been his biggest fan but he is dealing with a desperately difficult situation as well as anybody could.

He didn’t duck any questions and he did not retreat into a defensive stance.

‘We need to learn to deal with the noise,’ he said.

They seemed to do that pretty well today.

‘City celebrations emphasise the fact that English football is in a mess.

OLIVER HOLT AT ANFIELD:

The scenes of City celebrating a victory so joyously felt pretty unpalatable in the face of everything they have been found guilty of.

It is hard to blame them for that but it emphasises the fact that English football is in a mess.

Haaland: ‘I am so proud of everyone’

Erling Haaland, who grabbed City’s opening goal, has expressed his pride at how his team-mates dealt with the situation at Anfield today.

I think every single person part of Man City, this is a lovely moment and will stay with us for a long time,’ Haaland told Sky Sports.

It was tough, but we showed amazing character. Again, I am so proud of everyone.

It has always been tough here, but we stayed strong.

It’s always tough to come here in the Pep and Klopp era.

It’s time to stay strong and stick together and do what you can do something about, that is to play good football and to fight together because in the end, that’s the only thing we can do.

Anderson: ‘We’ve shown real togetherness and fight’

Man of the match Elliott Anderson has praised the togetherness of the Man City side today, speaking to Sky Sports.

We’ve shown real togetherness and fight. It’s a tough place to come and it’s challenging,’ Anderson said.

We really stuck together out there, fought for each other and played well. We’ve shown courage and three points is good.

[The atmosphere] was more than normal [pre match], arriving here and the first 10 minutes of the game.

I thought we did really well to quieten the crowd. We struggled in the first half a little bit, but in the second half we were a lot better.

Keane: ‘Man City made a statement today’

Roy Keane has claimed Man City made a statement on the pitch today, with Maresca’s side delivering despite the backdrop of the guilty verdict.

The fans will support their team through the good and bad, regardless of the headlines they have had over the last few weeks,’ Keane said.

Their team made a statement today, they scored three terrific goals.

City in the last half an hour showed great quality. Doku changed the game on top of the sending off.
