  • The former station has the potential to be redeveloped into a tourism facility

A former coastguard station with spectacular views over the Welsh coastline has been put up for sale for over £1.5 million,

The ex-coastguard HQ overlooking Bracelet Bay was a maritime rescue and co-ordination centre before being closed in 2015 as part of a shake-up of the rescue network.

Bracelet Bay is a popular tourist destination near the Gower Peninsula and has panoramic views the Bristol Channel.

The pebbly bay is surrounded by limestone cliffs and is only a six-minute drive away from Mumbles coast.

Given its location in the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), any redevelopment would need to avoid a significant impact on the landscape.

It has since been used as an administration and training facility before other potential redevelopment options were explored – including a hotel, food and drink, residential, a care home, and offices.

Planning officers said the building at Tutt Head, Mumbles, has the potential to become a tourism facility to enhance the area as a year-round destination.

Potential new owners have ‘endless opportunity’ with the site but may need to invest a bit more than just the selling price, as the building needs to be made watertight and renovated.

The 6,300 sq ft building sits on land owned by Swansea Council who have a 250-year lease and peppercorn annual rent, according to the sales brochure by estate agents Fine & Country.

The estate agent says the building comes as a ‘blank canvas to make your own’ and has potential for residential use, subject to planning approval.

Local councillor Will Thomas hopes the new use of the building would benefit people in the area, adding: ‘I really don’t want it to be a house – I think it would show a lack of ambition.’

A council spokesman said: ‘We look forward to seeing how any new owner plans to regenerate this property, currently owned by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Any plans will be subject to the formal planning process.’
