  • A remote island off the coast of southern Chile has hit the market
  • The parcel of land is totally pristine in the middle of a sparsely populated region
  • Spanning over 110,000 acres, the island is accessible only by boat or helicopter

An incredible island in Patagonia that boasts its own mountain range has gone up for sale for a staggering $35 million – offering potential buyers an incredible place to escape from the busy world around them.

Dubbed Virgin Island, the property is located in the sparsely populated Aysèn region in southern Chile on a secluded island in the South Pacific that offers 150 miles of coastline, freshwater lakes and lagoons, as well as a lush forest, with spanning upwards of 110,000 acres.

In addition to providing a lush habitat, the island could also prove incredibly popular with any doomsday preppers looking to escape a potential nuclear attack; because of its geostrategic location and history of neutrality, Chile is one of the least likely countries to face nuclear threat, making this remote piece of land the perfect safe haven.

What’s more, wind patterns and ocean currents affecting the region are very unlikely to spread nuclear fallout over Patagonia. Thanks to its decidedly remote locale, the island is miles from any built-up area that would be targeted for attack.

It also boasts huge reserves of natural resources that could be harnessed to help its wealthy owners survive the apocalypse.

This listing has an eclectic topography, encompassing jungles and high mountains dipping into deep valleys. With that, there are, three large lakes and more than 80 lagoons isolated from the ocean.

Overall, the island is half the size of Hong Kong and seven-and-a-half times larger than Manhattan.

Between the mainland and the archipelago of the southern Guaitecas, this pristine private island’s wildlife also exists untouched as it was thousands of years ago.

The diverse ecosystem makes it resilient to rapid environmental change, with the island being deemed a ‘fundamental green lung for the planet.’

Much of the island is covered in peatlands, known locally as turba, creating a natural incubator for flora. Defined as ‘terrestrial wetland ecosystems’ by the International Peatland Society, peatlands are recognized as the largest natural terrestrial carbon reservoirs in an ecosystem,

Large wetlands also spread throughout the island, storing freshwater and capturing greenhouse gasses.

The ideal buyer will view the island’s incredibly remote, untouched nature with a progressive eye toward preservation and adventure.

‘As the world is seemingly shrinking, and expansion opportunities for working on world-class properties are increasing, we are excited, privileged, and humbled to present the Virgin Island,’ the listing, held by firm Hall and Hall, reads.

‘It is a rare opportunity to present this unprecedented property to the global marketplace.

‘A true Rembrandt; the sheer size of this island is unmatched. Equally atypical is the extraordinary amount of surface water, wetlands, peatlands, over 100 miles of beach shoreline, waterfalls, springs, creeks, topography, and overall biodiversity.

‘The land’s distinguishing elements are finite, rare, and irreplaceably exceptional. Located in perhaps one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, if not the most diverse, the amount of biodiversity and abundance of hundreds of species of wildlife that exists is challenging to quantify.

‘The conservation and stewardship opportunities here are equally unprecedented. The acquisition of the Virgin Island presents an opportunity to preserve an ecological marvel while simultaneously contributing to the environment in a meaningful and ecological manner.

‘Terminology is often thrown out in an overused capacity; however, this property fits the saying, ‘once in a lifetime.’

To access the property, visitors must fly into the local Balmaceda Airport, roughly 100 miles away in mainland Chile, before continuing on to Virgin Island by private boat or helicopter.
