Neighbours are seeing red after a teacher had his house ‘Tangoed’ by painting it bright orange.

Carl Rawling had decorators repaint the front and back of the £200,000 detached house about a month ago when his next-door neighbours were away on holiday.

They returned to discover the house had turned from a forgettable beige to a stand-out orange.

Now the biggest talking point on Sea View Drive in Scarborough is the ‘Tango House’ rather than the picturesque sea views.

The homeowner declined to comment about his painting job but many neighbours are upset about the colour scheme, which is legal and within planning rules.

Carl Rawling had decorators repaint the front and back of the £200,000 detached house about a month ago when his next-door neighbours were away on holiday.

It is so bright that neighbours can see flashes of glaring orange reflected in the windows of houses opposite after dark.

Brian Richardson, who lives opposite, said: ‘We are the only ones who have to face it. Nobody likes it. They all complain about it. I cannot understand why that colour.

‘Talk to anyone who passes and they will tell you the same. But I don’t know what can be done.

‘He has lived on his own and is a teacher at the sixth form college. He is nice enough bloke and has lived here for at least ten years so I don’t know why he had it repainted after all this time.

‘It is right in your face. Everybody is anti. I have not heard anyone who likes it. But I don’t think anyone has said anything to him because they don’t want to fall out.

‘They complained about me when I moved in ten years ago and all I did was put up a taller garden fence.’

Another woman said: ‘It is not a very nice colour. It does not bother me because we do not see it over the fences. All we see is the bright orange reflected in the windows.

‘But if I lived opposite it I would have something to say about it. I assume it is legal and there is nothing we can do about it. But I feel sorry for those who live opposite it and have to look at it – it must be a nightmare.

‘It just appeared. I saw a chap doing something out the front and thought at first it was some kind of treatment and he was going to do something more with it. But that was it.’

Another woman who lives near the house said: ‘I think generally people are not very happy. Just ask anyone who lives in the street. He did not tell us he was going to do it. Hopefully, it does not start a trend.

‘A lot of people passing it walking their dogs make a comment – and they are not the best comments.’

A pensioner commented: ‘I don’t like it. Our friends and neighbours live opposite and they hate it. But we cannot do much about it. They have bought the house and can do what they like with it.’

Staring at the house is disbelief, a young woman walking her dog said: ‘It is right in your face really. Just after it happened, another neighbour decided to paint his blue. I don’t know if they were just being bold and wanted to jazz up the street a bit.

‘They obviously like the colour orange. It is personal preference I guess – but not to my taste.’

But not everyone is opposed to the orange house.

Another woman living opposite said: ‘I am fine about it. It brightens the place up.’

Normally homeowners are allowed to paint the exterior of their house any colour as it within permitted development rights.

However, some areas are subject to Article 4 directions in which planning authorities place controls over home development to protect the character of an area.

This is the case in conservation areas. When this happens residents must seek permission for renovations such as exterior painting.
