- David Lammy, named second on list, has been MP for Tottenham since 2000
- Tatler describes the Shadow Foreign Secretary as a ‘political big hitter’
- He joins Duke and Duchess of Westminster, Rupert Murdoch and Wayne Rooney
On a list featuring aristocrats, billionaires and models, it is perhaps a somewhat surprising inclusion.
Labour’s David Lammy has found himself rubbing shoulders with the likes of the Duke of Westminster and Rupert Murdoch, taking second place on Tatler’s Social Power Index, revealed on Monday.
The society magazine says the socially powerful are united by ‘good looks, glamour, philanthropy and desirable houses, of course.
‘But also Cheltenham races, St Moritz, Scotland and the South of France’.
Not all of which you would necessarily associate with Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, who has been MP for Tottenham since a by-election in 2000.
Labour’s David Lammy has found himself rubbing shoulders with the likes of the Duke of Westminster and Rupert Murdoch, taking second place on Tatler’s Social Power Index
According to Tatler, ‘Socially, David Lammy and his wife, artist Nicola Green, have made it’
Worth up to £10billion, Hugh Grosvenor, 33, owns large swathes of land in London including 50 per cent of Mayfair and 300 acres of Belgravia but resides in his Cheshire pile, Eaton Hall, with his new wife, Olivia Henson, 31
Nevertheless, Tatler describes the 51-year-old as a ‘political big hitter’.
It writes: ‘He didn’t want Trident renewed, but he does cherish power.
‘The Harvard law graduate, one-time choral scholar and alleged ‘Trump whisperer’ is a shapeshifting prince of political reinvention.
‘Yes, socially, David Lammy and his wife, artist Nicola Green, have made it.’
Former LBC presenter Mr Lammy raised eyebrows last month when he reportedly courted Republican presidential candidate Donald’s top team during a stateside visit – despite tweeting about Mr Trump’s ‘politics of hate’ in 2019.
Mr Lammy’s wife Ms Green, 52, is a British portrait artist whose subjects have included former US President Barack Obama.
Mr Lammy has also faced criticism for supporting a decision by the International Criminal Court to request an arrest warrant for Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant.
And he was accused of undermining the UK’s nuclear deterrent by voting against the renewal of the Trident missile system in 2016 along with Angela Rayner.
The Labour politician has been contacted for comment.
Number one on the list published yesterday were the Duke and Duchess of Westminster, who held ‘the grandest wedding of the year’ earlier this month with Prince William acting as usher.
Worth up to £10billion, Hugh Grosvenor, 33, owns large swathes of land in London including 50 per cent of Mayfair and 300 acres of Belgravia but resides in his Cheshire pile, Eaton Hall, with his new wife, Olivia Henson, 31.
Ms Henson works in the sustainable food sector and their marriage came just three years after they were introduced to one another by mutual friends.
It was a lavish no expenses spared day with 400 guests and was referred to as the ‘most royal non-royal wedding of the year’ at the historic Chester Cathedral – a site that the Grosvenor family have close ties with since the 12th century.
The 33-year-old heir is the godfather to William’s eldest son, Prince George, and Prince Harry’s son, Prince Archie.
George is believed to have been a pageboy at the wedding but Prince Harry was not invited in a bid not to overshadow the day. Princess Eugene was in attendance.
After the wedding, a private reception was held at Eaton Estate, which is on the outskirts of Chester and home to the Grosvenor family since the 1400s.. The 11,000-acre estate consists of property Eaton Hall as well as gardens, farmland and woodland.
David and Victoria Beckham, who are worth £362million, did not make it into the top ten
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, 93, and his fifth wife, retired Russian molecular biologist Elena Zhukova, came in at No 6,
Meanwhile, David and Victoria Beckham, who are together worth £362million, did not make it into the top ten.
But current England footballer Trent Alexander-Arnold, 25, and his new girlfriend – Jude Law and Sadie Frost’s model daughter, Iris, 23 – were ranked number five.
Hollywood ‘It’ couple Zendaya and Tom Holland weren’t picked either, despite the Spider-Man actor, 28, taking the lead in Romeo and Juliet on the West End and his 27-year-old girlfriend starring in Challengers, dubbed ‘the film of the year’.
British model and actress, Cara Delevingne, 31, also missed out, but her socialite sister Poppy, 38, was number ten with her new boyfriend Archie Keswick, 42.
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, 93, and his fifth wife, retired Russian molecular biologist Elena Zhukova, came in at No 6, while the full list also includes footballer Wayne Rooney and wife Coleen, and Foreign Secretary David Cameron and his wife Samantha.
