A couple who met on Blind Date have revealed their relationship is still going strong 35 years later.
Londoners Sue Tatham, 57, and her husband, Alex, 58, the first ever couple to marry after meeting on ITV’s Blind Date, back in 1988, revealed in a TikTok video that they are still happy as ever – and it’s all thanks to Cilla Black.
The video was posted yesterday by Meet Cutes NYC (@meetcutesnyc), a US TikTok account featuring couple’s love stories, after the creator happened on Sue and Alex by chance on a visit to London.
The person behind the camera approaches random couples on the street to ask for the story of how they met – and finding Sue and Alex was complete luck.
Londoners Sue Tatham, 57, and her husband, Alex, 58, recently revealed through a chance encounter on TikTok that they are still happy as ever – and it’s all thanks to Cilla Black
The man went up to the pair and asked ‘Excuse me sorry, are you two a couple?’
Alex replied ‘yes’ and the TikToker proceeded to question ‘Would you mind telling us the story of how you first met?’
Grinning, he replied ‘Yes, we met on television. We met on a TV game show’
‘Really, what was the game show?,’ the man asked, shocked.
Alex said ‘It was called Blind Date’ and Sue chimed in with ‘Cilla Black’.
Blind Date, ran from 1985 through to 2003. The British dating game show saw one singleton ask questions to three potential suitors dubbed Contestants One, Two and Three, before choosing who they wished to meet.
In its heyday, the show attracted 18.2 million viewers every Saturday night.
He continued ‘You can look us up on YouTube and 17.5 million people watched our wedding.
The TikToker added in a clip from the pair’s iconic episode where Cilla Black first introduced them 35 years ago
‘I mean, let’s face it, I could have picked from number one and number three, this is number two’ – Sue joked ‘they were also very nice’.
Then, the TikToker added in a clip from the pair’s iconic episode where Cilla Black first introduced them 35 years ago:
‘Here she is, you chose the lovely number 2 and that was Sue from West Midlands, come in Sue.’
The TikToker asked ’35 years in. What’s your favourite thing about her?’
Looking at his wife, Alex gushed ‘The fact that actually she’s as beautiful today as she was when I first met her.’
When he, then a 23-year-old accountant, picked the shy but smiley 22-year-old Sue, no one could have anticipated they would forge this life-long relationship.
When asked what her favourite thing about her husband was, Sue said ‘He’s so kind and he makes me laugh all the time.’
Finally, the loved up pair were asked what advice they would give to a couple who just met on a blind date.
Alex and Sue made TV history as the first Blind Date couple to get married. Cilla Black was the guest of honour at their wedding (pictured) in October 1991
Sue replied ‘Go into it with an open heart and just go in and make the best of it and be positive and be nice,’ meanwhile Alex added ‘I think the first thing that we said is that because we’re on a blind date, this is going to be a spectacular experience.
‘It’s in front of the entire UK public, the entire UK nation. We said that actually what we need to do is make sure that we remain friends for the rest of our lives in whatever happens.’
‘If you look up blind date wedding on YouTube you’ll see it.’
The TikTok finishes with the 1988 clip of Cilla announcing ‘Ladies and gentleman, Sue and Alex,’ as they walk out hand in hand and the rest became history.
The pair have two children, Emily aged 27 and Charlie aged 25, who they celebrated their 30th anniversary with back in 2021.
Commenters were fascinated by their love story and couldn’t believe the likelihood of the TikToker finding them on the street.
One user wrote ‘Wow!!!! What are the odds you would run into them?!?!?’
Another said ‘I’m sure it was the first time Cilla Black brought herself a new hat for the first blind date wedding. Old enough to remember it too’.
Looking at his wife, Alex gushed ‘The fact that actually she’s as beautiful today as she was when I first met her’
Someone else penned ‘Oh my God, a couple from Blind Date?! It’s so beautiful to know they’re still together!’
Other viewers picked up on little details in the video that proved how smitten Alex and Sue are with each other.
One commented ‘please the way he looks at her when she’s talking,’ meanwhile another added ‘the fact he searches for her hand all the time’.
Someone else chimed in with ‘I’m that old that I remember this and have occasionally looked them up! Amazing you just happened upon them’.
Another replied ‘Omg this is the cutest thing! What a story to tell your kids and grandkids’.
The couple came from very different backgrounds – Alex had been educated at Eton and then Durham University.
His family featured regularly in society bible Tatler, with one report covering Alex’s 21st birthday party at their home in Fulham, West London.
When Alex picked Sue (pictured with Emily, four and Charlie, two in 1998) on ITV’s dating show Blind Date in 1988, no one could have anticipated they would forge a life-long relationship
Stalwartly middle class, Sue is the product of a comprehensive in the West Midlands and left school at 18 to work in a DHSS office.
They courted for three years — spending every weekend together either in London or Walsall — before getting married at Sue’s parish church in Pelsall on October 19, 1991.
The British public loved their story so much that 5,000 strangers turned up outside the church to cheer them on, while the televised Blind Date wedding special was 1991’s second most watched programme, with 17 million viewers.
In 2021, Sue told FEMAIL: ‘We have each other’s backs.
‘Whatever life throws at us, we are there for each other. If we’re at a party, Alex will always have an eye on me, checking I’m OK.
‘We may come from different backgrounds, but we have similar values. We both hate arguments and make it a priority to have a friendly atmosphere. Family comes first, always.
‘Most of all, we want to have fun. We love trying new experiences together. And, believe it or not, I still get goosebumps when Alex walks into a room.
‘Life’s never boring with Alex around,’ she added, fondly, ‘I’ve loved every minute of the past 30 years with him.
‘I don’t think anyone would seriously recommend going on a dating show to find a husband, but it’s definitely worked out for us.
‘Without Blind Date, we simply would never have met. We’re enormously lucky.’
