While Brits should be focused on Chancellor Rachel Reeves and her delivery of the all-important budget, it seems people are distracted by her colleague’s feet.

Angela Rayner, 44, rocked up to Downing Street this morning to attend a cabinet meeting ahead of the budget in platform loafers with a bold purple zig-zagged sole.

With metal hoops piercing the toe cap, her quirky footwear costs £70 from the Gensai Cyber Punk range by Manchester-based vegan footwear brand Koi.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who made history in 2015 as Ashton-under-Lyne’s first ever female MP, paired the alternative shoe choice with a pair of wacky flamingo socks.

Rayner stepped out of a blacked-out car in a jade green suit with her ginger tresses down, her eyes painted with a shimmering golden shadow and her mobile phone swinging at her side from a light pink strap.

Born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, Rayner left school at 16 with no qualifications when she became pregnant.

She later trained in social care and became a trade union representative, during which time she joined the Labour Party.

In 2015, Rayner was elected as the MP for Ashton-Under-Lyne and rose through the ranks to take up various shadow ministerial positions.

The proud northerner is now the Deputy Prime Minister as well as the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.

With her long chestnut hair, and penchant for a dash of leopard print, the eye is drawn to her on the front bench.

Even though she may be the most powerful woman in the country, that doesn’t mean she’s lost her quirky dress sense completely.

Fashion designer Jashaan Gill hailed Rayner’s bold outfits and previously told Mail Online that despite working in Downing Street she was ‘staying in touch with her true self’.

He said: ‘She’s wearing bright colours. The two piece sets, the suit in the bright colours – a more formal approach now she’s in office.

‘But it’s nice to see she’s staying in touch with her true self.

‘It’s a great thing to see in the public eye. Politicians are more approachable, more relatable when they are wearing things at in line with fashion trends.’

He continued: ‘We’ve seen the grey and black suits – it’s boring in terms of the fashion perspective.

‘We’ve been disillusioned in politics because they’re not relatable.

‘It would be interesting to see how long these outfits are in the public domain for.’

Rayner is fond of a funky sock and a platform shoe: she’s worn them at various points – both in office and on the campaign trail – as they are comfortable while still providing height.

Whilst canvassing in West Lothian with Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar in June, Rayner wore Marvel superhero socks featuring the comic book characters Thor and Black Panther.

Rayner matched her cartoon socks with a pair of £139 Carvela Connected laceless trainers while meeting parents at the Broxburn Family and Community Development Centre.

Labour’s deputy leader seems to have a soft spot for Scotland as she has a pair of red tartan Dr Martens boots in her eclectic footwear collection.

In true Celtic fashion, she wore the boats while visiting Glenkinchie Distillery in Tranent this year.

Rayner has also turned heads with vegan leopard print boots and black platforms decorated with colourful flowers.

She sported the latter – £27.50 vegan leather Lamoda In Bloom sneakers –  at an unveiling of a statue of pioneering Labour firebrand and former Blackburn MP Barbara Castle.

In another landmark win for Labour’s women, today Rachel Reeves became the first woman to deliver a Budget.

Ms Reeves said she is ‘deeply proud’ to make history as the first female Chancellor.

At the start of the budget, she issued a heartwarming message to girls and women in the UK, and said: ‘Let there be no ceiling on your hopes, ambitions and dreams’.

Standing at the dispatch box, Ms Reeves outlined Labour’s plan to rake in a £40million a year extra in one of the biggest ever raids at a fiscal event.

‘Any Chancellor standing here today would face this reality, and any responsible Chancellor would take action,’ she told the Commons. That is why today, I am restoring stability to our public finances and rebuilding our public services.’
