Antiques Roadshow fans had a big complaint during Sunday night’s episode as a guest showed off his huge Nike trainers collection.

Expert James Broad was seriously impressed as he clapped eyes on the collection at Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery in Ealing.

A visitor had come in with his family to get a valuation for his trainer collection, bringing along just eight of around 40 to 50 pairs he owns.

The trainers were all unique however, James said, as he gushed over the rare ‘antiques’ – and agve them a whopping valuation of between £12,000 and £18,000.

But viewers were unimpressed by the segment as many complained that trainers shouldn’t qualify as antiques.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, as the episode aired, they wrote: ‘I’m sorry but how can 2003 Nike trainers be on the Antiques Roadshow?’;

‘There’s a man on Antiques Roadshow with a load of Nike trainers. We used to be a proper country,’;

‘Hey, Trading Standards, can you get the BBC to stop calling it ‘Antiques Roadshow’? Because no matter how you look at it somebody’s garish 80’s shirt and a few boxes of new trainers aren’t Antiques,’;

‘£18 grand for some trainers from the start of the century on Antiques Roadshow just now?!’;

‘Trainers are not antiques,’; ‘Sorry but this trainers display has just ruined #antiquesroadshow,’;

‘Just saying; Antiques Roadshow Since when does a collection of expensive trainers become an item classed as an ANTIQUE.’

The segment began as expert James told the family: ‘You have absolutely made my day with these. These are an incredible collection. Is this just part of the collection?’

‘Yeah this is part of a bigger collection I’ve got at home,’ the visitor replied. ‘About 40 or 50 at the minute.

‘They date from about 2003/2004 to sort of relatively recently, yeah.’

James said: ‘There’s a huge, huge following for the more limited runs of Nikes, which is definitely what these are. You’ve collected some of the rarer models definitely.’

He then picked up a pair of black trainers with bright pink laces as he added: ‘These ones in particular.’

‘There’s only 250 in total I think,’ the guest added. ‘They were sold through one store in New York in, I think, 2005.’

‘Were you in new York yourself?’ James asked, before the guest replied: ‘I wasn’t actually I got a friend to get me a pair. He had to queue for about eight hours.’

James replied: ‘He’s a good friend. he’s a very good friend, because there’d have been a lot of people in that queue.

‘The condition as well, as with all trainers, and most things in terms of the antique and vintage world, is condition. It looks from first inspection that none of these have been worn.’

The guest pointed to one pair as he added: ‘Yeah these ones actually have been worn but yeah that’s right, the rest are new.’

Picking up a pair of leopard print trainers, James said: ‘These are the ones I was drawn to straight away.’

The guest replied: ‘I think these are Safari Atmos, like an animal pack, I think it was 2007 they did a few different versions.

‘I don’t think they’re real skin just to clarify that but yeah they’re quite realistic.’

‘You’ve collected really well,’ James said, before adding: ‘I would comfortably put a value on these, if you were to sell these through auction, of £12,000 to £18,000 in the condition that they’re in, with the boxes.

‘I think they;re only going to go up. It’s a great investment so well done to you.’
