This is the moment King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden formally announced the name of his new baby granddaughter – but accidentally got her name wrong.
Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia welcomed their fourth child on February 7, with the royal family attending the official announcement of her name yesterday at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.
The couple revealed their newborn’s name was Princess Ines Marie Lilian Silvia – and shared an adorable photo of their bundle of joy to Instagram.
But King Carl, the baby’s grandfather, caused confusion after announcing the baby would be known as Princess Inse instead. He also said her middle names in the wrong order, instead calling her ‘Silvia Marie Lilian’.
In video footage obtained by Swedish news channel TV4, the error went relatively unnoticed aside from a few baffled glances at the awkward mistake.
The King, who has dyslexia, later issued an apology via the royal court, telling Swedish Magazine Svensk Damtidning: ‘The King is very sorry that he said the wrong name.
‘The reason he said the wrong name is that the names were kept secret until just before the council, even from the King.’
The monarch informed the Government that the Princess, who is eighth in line to the throne, will be named Ines Marie Lilian Silvia; known as Princess Ines – and has been granted the Duchy of Västerbotten.

A delighted Carl Philip, 45, was pictured at the event, which also included a gathering at the Palace church, with Ines’s three older brothers – his children Prince Alexander, eight, Prince Gabriel, seven, and Prince Julian, three – all sporting smart suits.
Other royals present included Crown Princess Victoria, and Queen Silvia.
‘In accordance with His Majesty The King’s decision of 7 October 2019 regarding changes in The Royal House, Princess Ines is a member of the Royal Family but not of The Royal House,’ the royal website read.
‘The Princess will therefore not enjoy the style of Royal Highness.’
The name has roots in a number of languages, and means ‘pure’, ‘chaste’ and ‘holy’.
Her middle names are a tribute to her grandmother Queen Silvia, and Princess Sofia’s mother, Marie Hellqvist. Ines is King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s ninth grandchild.
The Swedish royal family has released their first portrait of Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip’s newborn.

Commenters rushed to share the congratulations to the family, with messages of support.

According to the Palace, the royal, 40, delivered a ‘healthy’ daughter at on Friday 1.10pm, with her husband by her side.
Weighing a little over eight pounds at birth the Swedish newborn is the the couple’s first baby girl.
As she left the hospital, Princess Sofia was glowing, looking radiant as she smiled at waiting photographers.
She was dressed casually, wrapping up warmly for the brisk Swedish weather, donning dark flared trousers, a high neck cream sweater, and a coordinating cream jacket.
She wore her brunette tresses loose, and a natural make-up look, with glowing skin. She finished off the look with a baseball cap and thick soled dark boots.
Meanwhile, her husband was equally casual, opting for green slacks, blue trainers, a blue shirt, navy Winter coat, and green baseball cap.
The royal couple announced last September that they would be having their fourth child together.
A Palace statement revealing the pregnancy at the time said: ‘Swedish Royal Household at the time of the pregnancy announcement read: ‘Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia have the great pleasure to announce that the Princess is expecting the couple’s fourth child.

‘Princess Sofia is doing well and the birth is expected in February 2025. No changes are expected in Princess Sofia’s official program during the autumn.’
The statement was shared alongside a sweet photograph of the couple, with Carl Philip smiling at the camera, while his wife leaned her head on his face. The background featured a stunning lake and several mountains.
While she is eighth in line to the throne, Sofia and Carl Philip’s child will not have an HRH style title because of a decision made by King Carl XVI Gustaf in 2019.
During his Christmas speech, he revealed that he was stripping his grandchildren of their titles so that it could help them ‘eventually carve out their own future’.
The monarch said at the time: ‘The decision was to make clear who within the royal family will act as official representatives of Sweden in the future. For me, this is a way of clarifying what expectations are.
‘It will hopefully be helpful when my grandchildren eventually carve out their own future. But, to that day, it is far away.’
The new addition to the Swedish royal family is also King Carl and Queen Silvia’s ninth grandchild. Following the birth, the official Swedish royal family Instagram account published a picture announcing the news, prompting many fans to congratulate the couple.
