Experts have revealed why people are going gray earlier than ever before – as women flock to social media to question the shocking phenomenon.

Young women are taking to TikTok to ask why it seems like more people in their twenties and thirties are going gray, with many commenters saying it’s the stress Gen Z and millennials are under.

Over the summer, content creator Hannah went viral when she shared a video asking why women are prematurely graying.

‘I have a question – why are we all getting so gray so young?’ Hannah asked her followers.

‘Look at this. I am 29 and if I let this grow, I am going to look like a freaking grandma in a couple of years,’ Hannah joked.

‘Does anybody know?’ Hannah continued. ‘I know it’s genetics… but I’m still confused. I know so many people that are going gray.’

Commenters quickly weighed in with what they thought was causing it, from stress to vitamin deficiencies.

‘Stress and anxiety are killing us,’ one person responded, which was an incredibly popular answer – many young women explained that with inflation and current affairs, they felt they dealt with far more pressure than prior generations.

‘Look into copper and zinc deficiency. I’m almost 45 and barely have any grays,’ one woman announced.

‘People dye their hair. We’ve always gone grey. People are just not hiding it,’ another person explained.

In September, skin surgeon Dr. Neera responded to the viral video and offered a few explanations – as well as ways to prevent it and turn back time with new topical products that ‘may help to slow or even reverse gray hair.’

According to the Harvard-trained dermatologist, one option is Vegamour’s $78 plant-based Gro Ageless, a serum that reduces the appearance of gray on new hair growth and renews color in already graying strands.

The other option is Arey’s $55 To The Root Serum, a topical that promises to reduce the signs of aging and re-pigment hair.

In her viral video, Dr. Neera explained these topicals will work best for people who are experiencing early graying with less than 30 per cent of gray hair – but that they are promising treatments.

Board-certified dermatologist and trichologist Dr. Hamdan Abdullah Hamed, based in the UAE, told DailyMail.com, ‘Sometimes, health issues like low thyroid levels or autoimmune diseases can make hair turn gray sooner than normal.’

The PowerYourCurls.com founder explained that not getting enough of certain nutrients can turn hair gray, including copper, which helps make melanin, and gives hair its color, zinc, and Vitamin B12, which can also lead to hair loss.

And it’s not just an old wives’ tale that stress can cause graying – so Dr. Hamed suggests meditating or finding other ways to calm down, as studies have shown that reducing stress can even reverse graying.

Researchers at Columbia University found that hair color can be restored when stress is eliminated.

Dr. Hamed also suggested Minoxidil, as well as using natural oils on the scalp to prevent going gray early.
