  • Cerys Rees promised her husband she would scatter his ashes on every holiday

A British widow is fighting for her life in an induced coma after flying out to Turkey to scatter her husband’s ashes.

Cerys Rees, 34, of Pontypridd, South Wales, promised her late husband Gareth that she would scatter his ashes in every country she visited after he died earlier this year.

However, after suffering multiple seizures while abroad in Antalya, the Welsh woman has been left on a life-support machine in critical condition.

The 34-year-old’s friends travelled to Turkey to be at her hospital bedside after starting a fundraiser earlier this month to help bring her home.

But, Ms Rees’ family are now battling with an insurance firm to cover the £38,000 quote they received for her to fly back to the UK via air ambulance.

Ms Rees, who is a daughter and sister, suffered her first seizure on June 25, before she was rushed to hospital with collapsed veins.

Her family revealed that they are ”absolutely petrified” and ‘scared they might loose her in Turkey’.

Cerys had previously suffered a seizure after she and her late husband were hit by a drunk driver in 2022 .

Her condition is said to have worsened and on Monday her friends said she had been intubated and put on life suupport.

Her sister Rhianna told WalesOnline: ‘We as a family are absolutely petrified for her life and scared we may lose her in if we don’t get her back. Things can’t get any worse; we just want her home in hope the ICU at the Heath hospital can help her.’

Discussing the medical costs, Rhianna added that their family are going back and forth with their insurance company over its claim Cerys had not disclosed a pre-existing epilepsy diagnosis, something the family deny as they say she was never diagnosed.

She said: ‘The hospital are doing their very best and are now helping Cerys friends that are there organise air ambulance but we simply don’t have enough funds at the minute. I can’t thank the public enough for the funds they have already donated.

‘I just hope we can raise more publicity into the seriousness of her illness. Myself and Cerys’ mother are just living in fear, struggling to cope but trying to do as much as we can.’

Transferring her via an air ambulance is said to be recommended for her care.

As well as losing her husband in January 2024, Ms Rees also lost her brother in 2019 and her father in 2020.
