Bugatti is celebrating 20 years of hyper sports cars by unleashing on the world an ‘incomparable masterpiece’ – the 1,800hp Tourbillon.
The new generation hypercar from France’s most exclusive automaker has been unveiled in a live stream event called pour l’éternité (for eternity).
The headline from the Molsheim HQ is the Tourbillon’s the hybrid powertrain and V16 naturally aspirated engine.
The Chiron successor won’t be delivered until 2026, and only 250 examples will be built. Named after a Swiss-French watchmaking patent, the name inspires the same consistent time-keeping and original, complex and beautiful creation Bugatti prides itself on.

Plans for electric Bugatti hypercars takes shape: Historic French auto brand confirms new partnership with high-performance EV-maker Rimac

Bugatti’s been teasing the automotive world with tidbits about its Chiron successor for the last couple of weeks, with CEO Mate Rimac saying the V16 is naturally aspirated to make it as ’emotional’ as possible.
Now we can reveal the all-new 8.3-litre V16 – engineered with the help of Cosworth – is paired with a front e-Axle with two electric motors and one rear axle-mounted electric motor, which Bugatti says follows in the footsteps of the ‘benchmark’ W16 engine.
The Tourbillon’s ‘internal combustion engineering, paired with the immediate torque and flexibility of electric motors’ is ‘next-generation’, serving up 1,800hp.
That’s 1,000 from the combustion engine and 800hp from the electric motors.
The motors are powered by a 25kWh battery housed in the central tunnel behind the passengers.
The Veyron had four turbochargers to reach 1,001hp, so the V16 being naturally aspirated is ‘an extraordinary achievement’ Bugatti says.

Bugatti says it defies expectations in the automotive industry that ‘each new model is heavier than its predecessor, especially in the case a new model adds a hybrid powertrain or more performance’.
Yet with just a 225kg engine, electric powertrain and large battery pack the Tourbillon weighs less than the Chiron – ‘a testament to incredible engineering’.
The Tourbillon also has an entirely new chassis and next-generation weight-saving carbon body structure, front composite airducts and a lighter stiffer 3D-printed structural base. The 3D-printed aluminium suspension has saved 45 per cent in weight compared to the Chiron.
Emilio Scervo, Bugatti CTO, commented: ‘It was important to us that this car retained that pure and raw analogue feel of a naturally aspirated combustion engine, while pairing it with the agility and ability provided by electric motors.’

The horseshoe is the locking heart of the design, with all lines flowing out from there. ‘Shaped by speed’ the Tourbillon is focused around aerodynamics and thermodynamics, with the submerging rear wing, a climbing diffuser from behind the passenger cabin, left and right flying fenders and the sculpted frontal overhang which also houses a frunk storage compartment.
Frank Heyl, Bugatti Director of Design, said: ‘Ever since Jean Bugatti began to apply bold dual-tone paintwork to his cars, it has become an important part of Bugatti design DNA, and in the Tourbillon, we evolve it once more in an authentic but modern way.’

In doing so the design follows a horology analogue experience.
The instrument cluster has been designed and built by Swiss watchmakers, with 600 parts including titanium and gemstones – ‘an intricately engineered masterpiece’.

‘The result is a car which is beautiful inside and outside, the most powerful Bugatti to date which simultaneously elevates mechanical fascination and technical beauty to a whole new level.
The Bugatti Tourbillon is now entering its testing phase, with prototypes already on the road – super car spotters take note.
All 250 production vehicles will be hand-assembled at the Bugatti Atelier in Molsheim, following the final W16-powered Bugatti models, Bolide and W16 Mistral.
