Chappell Roan turned heads at the 2026 Grammys on Sunday in a topless look that nodded to Kanye West and Bianca Censori’s shock red carpet moment – and a body language expert says it was clearly meant to upstage them.
The Hot To Go! star, 27, who is up for Best Pop Solo Performance and Record of the Year for The Subway, went full-on shock mode in a sheer Mugler gown held together by little more than two hoops dangling from her nipples.
The daring ensemble left little to the imagination, instantly evoking last year’s Grammys, when Censori whipped off a fur coat to reveal a near-nude bodysuit that set social media on fire.
According to body language expert Judi James, Roan appeared to be chasing that same level of shock factor in a calculated bid to ‘out-dare’ every other artist.
‘Roan’s red carpet body language made her look uncomfortable, vulnerable and vaguely out of sorts with what looked like her own decision to try for a look that would out-dare every other artist in a gesture that was almost designed to shock as Kanye and Bianca’s infamous red carpet reveal a while back,’ James exclusively told Daily Mail.
However, James said Roan came off ‘looking unhappy and rather sulky as though maybe regretting her dress-decision.’

Before unveiling her daring nipple-ring look, Roan was first covered up in a wrap – a move James noted echoed Censori’s red carpet approach.
‘In a pod-style wrap of chiffon that was the exact same shade as her hair, Chappell first stood encased and awkward-looking, appearing to discuss her potential moves with her stylist,’ James said, highlighting the singer’s tentative start.

Her ‘reveal’ came when she flung off the wrap to expose just two points of chiffon over her nipples and a bared upper torso.
‘Unlike Bianca, she seemed uncomfortable about styling the daring moment out, though,’ James observed.
‘There were a couple of moments when she went from a less assured look to throwing her arms up and back in a pit-bare of total daring.’
Roan began with her hands behind her back before quickly lifting them to toss her hair and strike a peak-glamour pose, elbows raised in a brief gesture of fearless confidence.
But just as quickly, she fell back into what James described as ‘an unhappy or uncomfortable discussion with her stylist,’ suggesting something was clearly not to her liking.
Despite the unease, the singer still seemed eager to show off her full-length back tattoo and G-string, flipping her hair and striking a few more ‘unhappy-looking facial expressions,’ according to James.

Even Roan herself admitted the moment wasn’t entirely positive.
She told E! that the carpet felt ‘overstimulating’ because ‘people are filming you and you don’t know what they’re doing with it.’
James said the body language made this clear: ‘Her awkwardness was obvious from her constant changes of never-completed poses and her sulky mouth expression with some small biting movements as she looked around with unease’
And Roan may have achieved the effect James suggested with her daring take on Mugler’s 1998 ‘Nipple Ring’ dress, as fans immediately flooded social media with reactions.
One critic wrote, ‘I think they need a dress code cause wtf is this? This is not the “pink pony club.”’
Another added, ‘Days like this, I wish Joan Rivers was still alive. The roast would have been epic.’
And yet another chimed in, saying, ‘Well that was awful. Next.’
Despite the mixed reactions, Roan has long leaned on fashion as a core part of her identity, embracing bold, unpredictable looks as her signature.
Fans immediately flooded social media with reactions
‘We pull from drag, we pull from horror movies, we pull from burlesque, we pull from theatre,’ she told The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. ‘I love looking pretty and scary. Or, like, pretty and tacky – or just not pretty. I love that too.’
She’s made a clear distinction between her stage persona and real-life style, often sticking to muted tones offstage while reserving her most theatrical, jaw-dropping looks for performances and red carpet moments.
On the Call Her Daddy podcast, Roan reflected on how her relationship with fashion has shifted since stepping into the spotlight.
She explained she now keeps it low-key day-to-day, dressing ‘very modestly’ in blacks, whites, creams and taupes to avoid unwanted attention.
But early in her career, she admitted she went full throttle, describing her outfits as ‘really, really bimbo‑y,’ even wearing silicone inserts that pushed her chest ‘up to my f****** clavicle.’
Even amid all the glamour and theatrics, Roan hasn’t shied away from using her platform to speak up.
During her 2025 Grammys acceptance speech, she said, ‘Thank you all who listened to get me here today. I told myself if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels and the industry profiting millions of pounds off of artists would offer a livable wage and healthcare, especially to developing artists.’
At the 2026 Grammys, Roan returned both as a nominee for her hit The Subway and to present the award for Best New Artist.
On stage, she swapped her risqué red carpet ensemble for a more restrained look while handing the award to Olivia Dean.
