  • Five-month-old baby Ronnie’s birth certificate was returned to her home ripped

A Jewish father whose five-month-old daughter’s birth certificate was returned from the Passport Office ripped with the birthplace of Israel scratched out plans to sue the individuals responsible.

Israel, a father-of-three living in Edgware, north London, and his wife Dorin said they felt like a ‘target’ after opening the envelope only to find baby Ronnie’s identification papers had been defaced.

The incident, which Israel compared to something out 1930s Nazi Germany, led to a public outcry and the Home Secretary James Cleverly calling for an ‘urgent review’.

Last night it was revealed some members of staff at an unnamed private company working for the Home Office had been suspended while investigations continue.

The family were ‘not told personally that they had been suspended’ but were instead informed by the Campaign Against Antisemitism who have been advocating on their behalf.

Engineer Israel, 32, told MailOnline: ‘I am worried because the Home Office said some staff had been suspended – not just one person – which for me raises concerns that these people working for the company were in a hostile environment.’

The father revealed he had received a personal email from the head of the Passport Office who confirmed that they were ‘aware of the situation’ and carrying out an immediate investigation.

Israel added that the Government body have also issued Ronnie a new birth certificate.

‘We are very happy that the Government took swift action but I hope whoever this public servant is banned,’ he told MailOnline last night.

‘I would like to sue them personally for the damage they have carried out to my daughter’s birth certificate, my property.’

The family is in contact with a lawyer to discuss next steps and is considering whether to contact the police to report over a possible hate crime.

While they are pleased that the Government is ‘doing its best’ to deal with the situation in a ‘swift’ manner, Israel still has safety concerns, worrying that those responsible have had access to his personal details and social media.

He said: ‘I am very glad the government is doing its best and I really hope it’s not too late for something to happen. I am worried that they might have my details or social media.’

Israel also raised concerns about the vetting process of staff who work for private companies outsourced by the Government.

‘How are they accepting [staff] who do not meet the Government’s standards or values?,’ he added.

‘The Government absolutely needs to make sure when they get people working in their system they should be vetted and everything should be checked to ensure they are not part of a hate gang or any sort of hateful organisation.’

On Tuesday the engineer, who is also father eight-year-old Adiel and five-year-old Ella, revealed his fears of his children growing up in London due to the rise in cases of antisemitism.

‘The situation here is not good,’ Israel told Sky News. ‘To be Jewish in the UK is very hard. And it’s not getting better, it’s getting worse and worse.

‘I think my daughter, in 20 years, that’s her future, because London is not London anymore and I literally feel unsafe.’

Ever since the war broke out in the Middle East following Hamas’ October 7 attacks, Israel warned his older children to avoid revealing their Jewish identity in public.

He explained: ‘We are hiding our identity as much as we can and we are telling our children to hide any signs of being Jewish because the environment around here is not friendly towards Jewish people.

‘We are seen as targets and we have seen a sharp rise in the hostile environment.’

After bravely sharing his story, however, Israel has received overwhelming support from members of the public and those from the Jewish community.

He told MailOnline on Wednesday: ‘I do still worry about my children [growing up in London] but the kind words I received on the street today has made me feel that there will be a bigger change in tide about what’s happening over here.

‘It will bring more attention to such incidents. Maybe things will return to normal again and we should learn to teach kids so they have more awareness about hate crimes.’

Israel and Dorin, 29, were left in disbelief when they opened an envelope to find baby Ronnie’s identification papers had been tampered with.

Revealing the incident on Monday Israel said: ‘It was ripped half way through and my place of birth – which was Israel – had been scribbled out with a pen.

‘We felt as if we had been taken back to 1930’s Germany where the Nazis would put notes on Jewish people’s documentation.

‘It is completely warped and it hurts my heart that my daughter is not even six-months-old and she has already been discriminated on in the worst way.’

‘The Home Office is in charge of our safety as a minority in the UK and they deal with our most private documents but instead of sending us back the certificate in the right way someone within their system has scribbled out Israel because they have hostile feelings,’ Israel added.

The birth certificate was returned to the family with a tear on the right hand side, while the birth place of Ronnie’s father’s was scratched out in what appears to be a biro pen. Her mother’s birthplace of Israel, however, was left untouched.

The birth certificate was sent off as part of a passport application two weeks ago and returned on Monday.

The concerned father added: ‘This our Government and we are putting our faith in their hands so we want the Home Office to first apologise.

‘Afterwards we need to make sure this person, man or woman, cannot put their hands on other people’s private documents.

‘Unfortunately this birth certificate is not valid any more because it’s been scribbled on. So this person has destroyed my child’s identity, their birth certificate, just because it’s a Jewish person.

‘We are terrified because if this is the environment within the Home Office this is not a place we want to live. We are just as British as everyone else.’

A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism told MailOnline on Monday: ‘This is completely unacceptable.

‘When sending off a passport application to the Home Office, the last thing one should ever expect is to have their child’s birthday certificate returned, torn, with the parent’s place of birth scribbled out, just because it is the Jewish state.

‘We are assisting the parents, who are understandably very concerned about this incident. We are also asking the Home Office to investigate how this happened.

‘The Home Office has responsibility for law enforcement and the security of the Jewish community and the wider public. Confidence in the authorities among British Jews is at painfully low levels and must be restored.’

Home Secretary James Cleverly said on X on Monday night that he had called for an immediate investigation into the matter.

Responding to the image of the invalid birth certificate, which has since been shared widely on social media, he said: ‘I have asked my officials to investigate this urgently and will see that appropriate action is taken.’

The Home Office had no further updates as enquires are ongoing.
