Dramatic footage shows the moment a drunk driver crashed his van into a house, narrowly missing three children.

Mike Turner drove his van through Gloucester despite being three times the drink-drive limit, before hitting and destroying a home with a family inside.

The incident happened shortly before 8.05pm on August 9 in the city’s Tuffley Lane.

A camera on the semi-detached property caught the moment Turner’s Vauxhall Vivaro clipped the edge of a roundabout, crossed a grass verge, ploughed through a fence, hit a car and smashed into the side of the house.

His vehicle narrowly missed a husband and wife who were watching TV in the lounge of their home.

Their adult son, whose Ford Escort was written off after the collision, was in his bedroom.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said: ‘We heard two really loud bangs and we both dived off the sofa. I said, “What’s that?”

The couple had no idea what had happened until they went outside and saw the van embedded in the side of their house. They quickly discovered that the three youngsters who were nearly hit had already called the police.

The woman said: ‘I can moan about the house and car being damaged but that’s all repairable and replaceable. If those young people walking past our house had been badly hurt, we would never have got over that.

‘When I saw the video, I was really shocked to see how they could easily have been injured.’

Scaffolding has been installed at the property to stop the porch and the side of the house from collapsing, and the family are waiting for an expected 13-week repair job to begin.

The cost, which is likely to run into thousands of pounds, is due to be met by Turner’s insurance company.

The 53-year-old builder, of Gloucester Road in Hartpury, Gloucestershire, was more than three times the drink-drive limit, a court heard.

He was sentenced to an 18-month community order and banned from driving for 26 months when he appeared at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court. At a previous hearing, he pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

Prosecuting at his sentencing, Emily Packer said that after the crash, police found him slumped over the driver’s seat of the van. She said he suggested to them that he had suffered a seizure but when he was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester, he was assessed as being fit.

A breath test conducted by the police found he had 113 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Defending himself in court, Turner said he suffered from seizures but had also been drinking too much alcohol following the breakdown of his marriage.

He said: ‘I’m really upset about that. But I’m starting to get better with my drinking and my mental health is getting better.’

He said he had seen his doctor about feeling so low and he was fortunate to be getting support from his parents, with whom he was living.

The magistrates, who heard Turner did not have any previous convictions, said the community order they were issuing included an alcohol treatment requirement.

They fined him a total of £259 and offered him the chance to reduce his driving ban by six weeks if he completed a drink-drive rehabilitation course.

The family whose house was damaged said they hoped that sharing the video of the incident would deter people from drink-driving.
