How Desert Island Discs DJ Lauren Laverne supported Rob Delaney, Thom Yorke, Tom Daley and Jeremy Bowen as they opened up about their cancer stories – before star, 46, revealed her OWN battle today

BBC star Lauren Laverne lent support to Rob Delaney and Thom Yorke as they opened up about their own cancer tragedies before today revealing she is also battling the disease.

The DJ, 46, said she is expected to make a full recovery after the disease had been caught early.

She bravely posted a picture on her Instagram account of herself smiling from her hospital bed with a pillow tucked behind her head.

The mother-of-two has previously spoken to guests about cancer on her Radio 4 show Desert Island Discs.

She was praised by listeners for her ‘warmth and empathy’ after her debut show in 2018 in which Olympic diver Tom Daley spoke of his final moments with his father Robert who died in 2011 following his battle with cancer.

Rob Delaney appeared on the long-running show just weeks before Laverne’s shock announcement, in which he opened up about his grief of losing his two-year-old son Henry to the disease.

Laverne was softly spoken as she said how it was ‘so difficult to comprehend’ the ‘agony of what you all went through’.

Radiohead frontman Yorke also used the platform to open up about his own struggles and the ‘hard time’ his family went through when his ex-partner and mother of their two children, Rachel Owen, died of cancer aged 48 in 2016.

BBC international editor and war reporter Jeremy Bowen told Laverne last June how his bowel cancer diagnosis in 2019 had ‘brought back’ his optimistic side.

In an emotional and candid interview with comedy star Delaney, 47, in July, Laverne asked him what he recalled after Henry’s shock diagnosis with it affecting his memory.

‘Just the world stops and you are brutally humbled,’ he said. ‘It’s like being ganged up by people with baseball bats. It’s just so confusing and so upsetting and so surreal and then you’ve got to get through that and help your little guy. Yeah it was terrible.’

Laverne touchingly and gently goes on to ask how his family managed to grow together (Delaney’s wife, Leah, was pregnant with their fourth child when Henry died).

‘It must have been extraordinarily difficult for you?’ she asks.

Delaney movingly detailed how Henry’s younger brother had helped as he bravely opened up about his fears he wouldn’t be able to love the newborn with his heart ‘torn to pieces’.

‘But the nanosecond he exited my wife’s body, I looked at him and started weeping, and I was so in love with him…I love him desperately. But you have to feel and honour your pain. You have to let it hurt and when the feelings come it’s best to let them.’

Journalist Bowen appeared on the show last June and candidly told how the disease had changed his outlook life.

‘I had cancer a few years ago – touch wood I’ve been in remission now for four and a half years – and it was quite a serious tumour, so I think that has also helped me get a sense of perspective on life,’ he said.

‘Because I’ve always been a glass half full than half empty person and that maybe changed for a while. And I think actually, having had cancer, brought back the more optimistic Jeremy.’

When Yorke was on Desert Island Discs in 2019, Laverne spoke about the ‘tragic death’ of his ex Owen and how he approaches fatherhood with his two children, Noah and Agnes.

Yorke spoke of how it was ‘very hard’ as artist and Oxford University lecturer Owen had ‘suffered a great deal’.

‘When the kids’ mum died, it was a very difficult period and we went through a lot. It was very hard,’ he said.

‘She suffered a great deal and my ambition is to make sure that we have come out of it all right, and I hope that’s what’s happening.’

A year earlier listeners were full of praise for Laverne when Olympic diver Tom Daley appeared on the show.

He spoke candidly during his interview, describing the moment he held onto his dad Robert’s hand as he took his final breath, following his five-year battle with cancer in 2011.

Fans described the episode as ‘moving’ and were quick to praise host Lauren Laverne for her ‘brilliant’ debut performance on the show, commenting on her ‘warmth and empathy’.

Describing the moment he died, he continued: ‘I was holding his hand as he stopped breathing and it wasn’t until he’d actually stopped breathing and he was dead that I finally acknowledged he wasn’t invincible.’

Laverne did not reveal the type of cancer she had been diagnosed with in her post this morning, but said it had been picked up ‘unexpectedly’ during a screening test.

Laverne thanked the medical teams ‘who have got me this far with incredible skill and kindness’.

She has been married to television producer and DJ Graeme Fisher since 2005 after the pair hit it off while working together on a pop television show in the early 2000s.

They have two sons together – Fergus who was born in 2007, and Mack who arrived three years later – and live in London.

In an Instagram post, the 46-year-old star told fans from her hospital bed that she was expected to make a 'full recovery'

‘I’m in hospital at the moment and wanted to take this moment to say thank you: Firstly to the medical teams who have got me this far with incredible skill and kindness.

‘To my family and friends who have been absolutely extraordinary every step of the way – I am so very grateful and love you so much. And of course thank you to my colleagues – including those at @itg_ltd, @bbc6music, @bbctheoneshow and #DesertIslandDiscs for their support – and for giving me the time off that I need to get better.’

She went on to urge others that might be ‘avoiding a test or putting off an appointment to get yourself checked out’ to ‘please, please do it today’.

‘Half of us will get cancer at some point, and if you do, finding out asap is everything,’ she said.

‘It’s usually my job to bring the good vibes on air but any you have to spare are very much welcome here. Sending loads of love to anyone in a similar boat, or who has made it back to shore. xxx’

Following her musical stint she became a radio DJ, earning slots at BBC Radio 1 and Radio 6.

When Kirsty Young stepped away from her role for a brief period because of her fibromyalgia treatment, she took over on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs.

‘She’d been a fan ever since she saw him at the Sunderland Empire in 1963 (and later met him later with me – he was just lovely to her).

‘Mam, I love you forever. Thank you for my fantastic life. I have no idea what I’m going to do without you, but I’m going to try to make it interesting and you will be in my heart, always XXX.’
