Nigel Farage recalled the horrific injuries he sustained from a plane crash during Tuesday’s episode of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, insisting the accident means he lives with a ‘devil may care attitude’ today.
The former politician, 59, was left injured so badly 13 years ago that he underwent a neck reconstruction and had his leg in a plaster cast for a year after he flew in a light aircraft with a Brexit banner trailing behind.
He also underwent a major spinal operation following the accident 13 years ago when the aircraft, towing a Vote UKIP banner accidentally wrapped around the tail and rudder during the flight, causing the plane to nosedive to the ground, injuring him and the pilot.
In 2016 Nigel was involved in a high-speed road accident while driving home from Brussels and in 1985 he was hit by a Volkswagen Beetle while on a pelican crossing.
After his Brussels crash, Nigel suspected his car had been tampered with but a mechanic later quashed these claims and revealed it was the result of poor repair work.

Nigel told his campmates about his previous plane and car crash after This Morning host Josie Gibson asked: ‘What were you doing at the time when you were flying a plane, where were you going?’
Nigel admitted: ‘Being an idiot, flying a banner,’ prompting Fred to ask: ‘What was on the banner?’
Nigel replied: ‘A Brexit message, obviously…’
Fred asked: ‘What was the message?’
Nigel said: ‘Vote for independence or something like that.’
Nigel continued to explain his injuries: ‘I don’t recall being unconscious, but I do recall the explosion, the plane flipping over, being stuck in there, everything broken… every rib front and back, split sternum, punctured lung… it was bad.’
Hollyoaks star Nick Pickard asked: ‘How long were you hospitalised for?’
Nigel said: ‘Not as long as I should have been, I discharged myself, I got bored.’

MasterChef star Grace Dent laughed: ‘Oh yeah, I can tell you’re one of them.’
Nigel said: ‘When bad things happen to you in life you’ve got to make a decision. Have I been unlucky, have I been lucky?’
Grace asked: ‘Do you think that flavours how you live your life? That devil may care attitude?’
Nigel replied: ‘Yeah. That was one of the things. I’ve had a few things happen which I think does actually help with thinking, “Sod it I’m going to do what I believe.”‘
Grace asked: ‘When you stand up in a room and make a speech that’s incredibly unpopular, do you think that flavour of it is you only live once?’
Nigel replied: ‘Definitely,’ prompting Grace to ask: ‘You don’t mind being unpopular?’
Nigel said: ‘It depends who you’re unpopular with.’
Nigel has been ruled out of doing Bushtucker Trials if they put medical welfare at risk.
He was given immunity from skydiving into the I’m A Celebrity jungle due to the injuries he sustained in his terrifying plane crash in 2010.
ITV bosses signed him on the understanding that he would not be able to carry out some tasks, including ones that involve lifting heavy weights. He also avoided the plank challenge.
A source close to the former UKIP leader said: ‘Nigel can’t do strenuous activity because he’s been in a car crash, as well as the plane crash and he’s had his neck reconstructed.

‘Some of the stars will be going in by jumping out of an aeroplane but there is no way he can do that. He was left so badly injured and there are some things that would be dangerous for him to take on.’
Instead of jumping out of the plane like campmates have in previous years, Nigel was sent to take part in a desert challenge with Josie and TikTok sensation Nella Rose.
Revealing his limitations in the jungle beforehand, Nigel told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Well, anything involving weight lifting, I’d be out because I’ve obviously had some quite serious physical injuries and neck reconstructions and goodness knows what else.’
I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! continues Wednesday 22 November at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
