Since it came out in 2016, TikTok has become a platform for quite literally everything; whether you want to laugh, cry, learn how to bake a soufflé or how to change a tyre.

The social media app has been the medium through which millions of people across the world have launched a career, sharing content and receiving a salary through ad revenues and sponsorship deals.

Lately, British blue-collar workers have been banking in on the money-making app, posting unexpectedly popular videos of different trades.

A study from Bionic even found that tradespeople and small business owners could be making up to £11,000 per post as well as £1million per year.

One popular TikToker, ‘The Pool Guy’, who is well known for his swimming pool cleaning videos, has amassed a whopping 14.8 millions followers on the app as well as 20 million total on his social media platforms which include YouTube and Instagram.

The labourer, Miles Laflin from Bedfordshire, started making videos after being offered a permanent role as swimming pool apprentice.

His website reads that he is skilled in: ‘Everything from opening and closing, general maintenance, plumbing, and chemical balancing.’ ‘No job is too big and the dirtier the pool, the better!’ he added.

His content has become so popular that he’s landed a number of celebrity clients including Stacey Solomon.

A few years ago, it was estimated that the social media cleaning star could be earning up to £1.3million in year from sponsorships, significantly more than the figure suggested of £17,560 per year for an apprentice.

Another popular trader who has started making cash from trade videos is the Paint Warrior, aka Kevin Tingley, who features clips showing how to get the most out of painting houses.

The Surrey based painter has amassed over a million followers and 29.4 million likes on his videos, showing users things from how to wet a roller properly and how to get the cleanest paint job.

The rate of earnings for decorators can vary significantly, with the salary from a newly qualified worker coming to £16,682 per year, a figure that is no doubt topped up by the trader’s one million followers.

Glyn Britton, Chief Customer Officer explained the new trend to Bionic: ‘Social media, particularly TikTok, can be such an impressive tool for small businesses to use.

‘It allows them to share genuine footage of their day to day processes and jobs – giving people a glimpse “behind the scenes”.

‘Much of the video content we can see being created now is roughly filmed on smartphones by people with no formal social media experience.

‘However, the authenticity, personality and craftsmanship being showcased is why the public readily engage time and time again.’

No trade is left untouched as electrician, Ryan, from London, has proved with his popular TikTok account which brings in 343.4k followers and has 10.3 million likes.

He documents his work life, sharing videos of his electrical workings, vlogs of his day and even the occasional ASMR video.

His 300,000 followers likely provide a cash top up from his usual wage, which is £33,636 for the average UK electrician.

And it’s not just men profiting from the satisfying videos: a woman, called Pink Plumbing, has 36.5K followers and 225.7K likes and describes herself as ‘just a plumber/gas engineer that loves Pink.’

Real name Helena Szmalec, the labourer works for a female led plumbers with the same name which is based in Derby.

She regularly posts videos of her installing pipes in mucky paint splattered worker trousers, along with a branded pink t-shirt with the company name on.

The content creator’s videos tend to show more typical TikTok clips with a sound or dance attached, rather than explainer videos of the work being done.

Nevertheless, the allure of the trade has still helped her collect a strong following on the app, which no doubt helps put pounds in the pocket.

The wage for a plumber in the UK would normally be around £28,974 for a working professional.

Jess Lorrio is another who has realised the potential of profiting from working videos, though, it isn’t her main source of income.

The American OnlyFans model describes herself as a ‘Finish Carpenter Model Momma’ and regularly posts to her 68.8k followers, videos of her sawing through palettes and building decking.

The blonde model appears scantily clad in videos shared to her TikTok account where she shows off her many talents, including installing a drop ceiling, tiling her own shower or re-doing her own stairs.

The salary for a UK based carpenter would be £18,000 for an apprentice.

Whether it be explainer videos on tricks of the trade or simply the satisfying end result of a job, trades people videos are popular and are likely helping labourers bulk out their wallets.

One explanation for why users enjoy content which shows a before and after could be the popularity of videos where a task is completed or satisfied. ‘Oddly satisfying videos’ on the app have pulled in 3 million views.
