Tie-dye frocks, hot pink hair and fishnet were all rage on Ladies Day at the Betfred St Leger Festival on Thursday.

Kicking off the four-day fun at Doncaster Racecourse, guests opted for outfits which were both elegant and experimental, combining classic fascinators and floral headpieces with more edgy looks, and brighter colours.

One attendee put on a colourful display in a button-up dress, which matched her magenta hair and trendy flower crown.

Elsewhere, a woman demurely sipped out of a champagne flute sporting a fishnet turtleneck, studded leather harness, and fedora hat.

Another guest was the vision of elegance in a scarlet gown that matched both her shoes and handbag.

Other selections included classic pastel numbers, with many opting for pink and blue.

According to its website, Ladies Day at Betfred St Leger is ‘Yorkshire’s biggest social occasion’.

‘The ultimate in glitz and glamour,’ it reads. ‘The day attracts the finest in fashion, and the stakes are set high with the Style Awards and huge £1,000 cash prize to be won.’

This year, as reported by the Doncaster Free Press, the winning prize went to Leesa Smickersgill from Belton who stunned in an all-white ensemble embroidered with flowers – which came with a matching parasol.

The festival attracts thousands for four ‘thrilling days of action and excitement’ in racing.

On the programme tomorrow is Betfred Doncaster Cup Day, which promises to bring some of the most ‘prestigious’ racing of the week in.

It is the oldest race currently run under the rules of horse racing and is the final leg of the Stayer’s Triple Crown.

On day three, the festival will enjoy Betfred St Leger Stakes, and the following is known as the ‘Sunday Funday’.

‘The final day of the festival, the Betfred Sunday Funday, showcases great horse racing, including the Leger Legends charity race for ex-professional jockeys,’ the website says.

‘That’s not all! Get ready for a day of fun, with a whole host of family-friendly entertainment on show across the course.’

It comes as Owen Burrows has launched a robust defence of the Betfred St Leger as he aims to make his Classic breakthrough.

A field of seven, including three from Aidan O’Brien’s all conquering yard, have been declared for the historic contest but critics have started to question the relevance of this mile-and-three-quarter test.

The fact it clashes with a star-studded Irish Champion Stakes, which is due off 10 minutes before The St Leger, has given more ammunition to those who believe this is a Group One in name only.

But Burrows will unleash Deira Mile full of confidence on Saturday after saddling 10/1 chance Nakheel to win the Group Two Park Hill Stakes – often called the ‘Fillies Leger’ as it is run over the same distance on Town Moor – and is adamant it is a race to be cherished.

‘There are only five Classics a year and you try to win one of them to see how hard it is,’ said Burrows. ‘If I was to win this, I would be absolutely over the moon. We will be trying our hardest and it is great to have a horse to be able to run in it.

‘Our horse is in great form, he’s finished fourth in The Derby and has come on from his last run at Windsor in good shape. I hope he can end the year with a bang.’
