Jonathan Ross has opened up about the ‘horrible’ moment that ‘took a toll’ on Celebrity Traitors champ Alan Carr and left him ‘with his head in his hands’ – but never made it to screens while on Friday’s episode of Good Morning Britain.

The 64-year-old appeared on the ITV show to chat to former Traitors co-star Kate Garraway, 58, and her co-host Adil Ray, 51, about the epic series which wrapped up on Thursday.

Last night comedian Alan Carr, 49 – who was a Traitor alongside Jonathan and Cat Burns, 25 – was crowned winner of the first series of the BBC show as he went head to head against Cat, Joe Marler, 35, Nick Mohammed, 45, and David Olusoga, 55.

Jonathan was voted off the programme quite early on as his co-stars managed to suss him out as a Traitor.

Speaking about the show, Jonathan said: ‘I did feel it was much harder than I expected, and I did struggle with that.’

He went on to explain there was one bit in particular, that fans didn’t see, which got him and Alan the most.

Jonathan continued: ‘Cat not so much, she said it was a game, she found it easy to put into perspective, even though often we’d be driving home much later at night than you guys, we’d be driving in the car with head in our hands going “oh God”.

‘And Alan and I were very aware that it was taking its toll. But having said that, what a lovely opportunity what an incredible thing to be apart of.’

Entertainment editor Richard Arnold went on to say that it was interesting that it was ‘quite the pressure cooker that it was’.

Jonathan confessed: ‘It was horrible at times, because as a traitor you’re speaking to really nice people who you wanted to support in the show, and make sure they had a good times well.

‘Then you would suspect, or be fairly certain they knew it was you.

‘Whenever I do a show I always go in and said I’ll give as much as I can, try and help the show be as good as it can be. I always turn up to work.

‘Then you have to try and engineer ways to get them out and you see them standing there being banished… because you’ve successful and then you see they’re upset and to see someone upset, you’ve played a part in it.

‘It’s a horrible feeling, even though it’s essential to the game.’

Alan won Celebrity Traitors after a nail-biting final on Thursday night.

Viewers applauded the hapless comedian who had been among the bookies’ favourites to win, after he managed to remain undetected throughout the competition while carrying out two ‘murders’ in plain sight.

But he faced an uphill battle as the Faithfuls voted out fellow Traitor Cat Burns, 25, earlier in the game, leaving him the last one standing.

After managing to convince Nick Mohammed and David Olusoga he was a Faithful and in doing so ending the game, Alan burst into tears when host Claudia Winkleman asked him to finally reveal his true identity.

Alan revealed the betrayal had been ‘tearing me apart’ as a stunned Nick held his hand to mouth in shock, while David was – to quote Kate Garraway – ‘flabbergasted’.

The comedian said: ‘I was awful, I had no poker face but here I am. Maybe I do exaggerate a showbiz story now and again. But to just lie to people’s faces, it was tough’.

Fans of the show took to X to comment on the epic scenes, sharing their disbelief as to how Alan managed to win.

One wrote: ‘Well done Alan. Of the Traitors you deserved it most. It had to be you or Joe. Alan played it all brilliantly from start to finish. Murdering in plain sight twice. He more than earned it. Great charity too.’

Others said: ‘How Alan managed to win it still baffles me but kept us on our toes for sure’.

‘Who would’ve thought Alan Carr would be the greatest traitor of all time! What an incredible series. Our people’s princess for life.’

‘Alan Carr was hiding in plain sight. Nick Mohammed how could you? I literally thought they’ve left it late but they’ll get them all! Blahhh! Never mind, great charity. Children’s brain tumours need a lot more research’.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX from 6am.
