With a private school upbringing, A-list parents and the world at her fingertips – it’s perhaps no surprise Apple Martin was seen glamorously pouting at the Le Bal des Debutantes.
But the 20-year-old student has been accused of being a ‘mean girl’ after seemingly upstaging another debutante.
And now a clip of Gwyneth Paltrow talking about her own diva antics as a young woman has resurfaced.
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show five years ago, the actress-turned-wellness entrepreneur told the BBC presenter that her father Bruce Paltrow had warned her against becoming an ‘a**hole’.
On the BBC show, Gwyneth recalled how her filmmaker father Bruce – who died in 2002 – noted young fame had turned her into a bit of a brat.
Gwyneth, now 52, earned global stardom after appearing in a series of Nineties and Noughties blockbusters including The Talented Mr Ripley, Shallow Hal, and The Royal Tenenbaums.
Speaking about grappling with her celebrity status, Gwyneth revealed that Bruce candidly informed her that she was ‘becoming an a**hole’ following her Academy Award win for Shakespeare in Love.
She credited her father, who died in Italy during Gwyneth’s 30th birthday celebrations, for being a grounding force amidst her rapid rise to fame.

A clip from Le Bal des Debutantes appeared to show Gwyneth’s daughter Apple, 20, stealing fellow debutante Alienor Loppin’s moment in the spotlight
She told Graham: ‘I won an Oscar when I was 26. So, I was really young.
‘I think, my philosophy is that fame is actually not very good for us as people,’ she continued, ‘because everybody starts removing all of your obstacles.
‘And, I think, friction is actually what makes you grow. And so, all of a sudden, I was this pretty young woman and everybody was removing my obstacles…and I think incrementally I started just behaving strangely or a little weird.’
She continued: ‘And my father…he sat me down one day and he said, in his inimitable Brooklyn way, “You’re kind of turning into an a**hole.”
Gwyneth credited that conversation with being ‘incredibly important in my life’ because it ‘really burst a bubble’ and brought her back to reality.
The star’s candid admission went viral following Apple’s Le Bal debut, with some people drawing parallels between the mother-daughter duo.
They were reacting to a clip of Apple that appeared to show her stealing fellow debutante Alienor Loppin’s moment in the spotlight at the prestigious event in Paris.

In the video, Alienor was seen posing for photographs when Apple edged her way into the frame – essentially forcing the French countess out of her way.
Reacting to the perceived slight, one social media user noted that Apple’s behaviour was ‘giving Regina George’ in reference to the notorious queen bee in the movie Mean Girls.
After the video of Apple and Alienor went viral, Gwyneth’s appearance on The Graham Norton Show in 2019 began trending – with some people drawing comparisons between the two.

Belles of the Debutante Ball: Meet the women who joined Apple Martin at the Parisian extravaganza
The stunning model made her high-society debut during the high-profile event that was held at the Hotel Shangri-La in Paris, with the daughter of Gwyneth and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin opting to wear a custom Valentino gown for the occasion.
The Vanderbilt University student descended the staircase wearing a baby blue strapless gown which took 750 hours to create and was designed by Alessandro Michele – the creative director of the luxury couture house.
Speaking to MailOnline, body language expert Judi James said Apple acted like the recent debutante ball was her ‘birthday party’ rather than a prestigious event to present ‘a whole group of young ladies.’
In addition to her viral exchange with Alienor, Apple was caught on camera rolling her eyes at her cavalier Count Leo Henckel von Donnersmarck.
After analysing pictures and videos from the event, the UK-based body language expert said it looked Apple was ‘itching to get in front of the lenses.’
Judi added that it seemed like Apple expected it to be ‘the Apple show’ and treated it more like a ‘fun’ birthday bash than an esteemed event.
‘It looks as though Apple is itching to get in front of the lenses,’ Judi dished. ‘She appears to upstage the first woman by stepping forward and showboating for the cameras, adopting some more dramatic poses that suggest she is anything but a shy introvert.

The daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin treated the deb ball as if it were her own birthday party, according to Judi James
‘Considering her more private years growing up, Apple really does seem to have burst onto the scene here with body language that looks so confident she leaves her [own] mother looking rather camera-shy beside her.
‘This looks so much like the Apple Show, with the photos emerging suggesting a formal, fun birthday party rather than a launch for a whole group of young ladies.’
Even as her appearance in Paris drew criticis and inevitable accusations of privilege, a faction of social media followers later took to X to defend Apple.
One observer wrote: ‘Apple doesn’t give me bully vibes at all?? Especially with a dad like Chris Martin.
‘I don’t know for sure ofc cuz I’m not there but that’s just what I see, and of course lots of people of tiktok like to blow things out of proportion.’ [sic]
Referencing the now-notorious moment Apple appears to gatecrash fellow debutant photo opportunity, another person added: ‘You can CLEARLY see the photographer motion her to stop for a photo and she playfully indulges him.
‘She seems excited to be outside and was just being silly. Y’all better leave Chris Martin’s Apple alone.’
