Meghan Markle today unveils her new cooking show to the world, in what could be a make-or-break moment for the Sussexes following a series of humiliating media gaffes.

‘With Love, Meghan’ landed on Netflix at 8am and is aimed at showing a new side to the Duchess of Sussex – with royal sources saying it could be the last roll of the dice to salvage her and Prince Harry’s lucrative $100million streaming deal.

Since Harry and Meghan signed the mega deal in 2020, there has been one smash hit and three relative duds, sparking speculation Netflix might soon cut ties.

Viewers have already been delivering their verdicts with one former TV critic describing it as a ‘cure for insomniacs’.

‘Boring, ghastly and pretentious’: Lady Colin Campbell’s verdict on With Love, Meghan

Lady Colin Campbell, the socialite and reality television star, has become the latest to deliver a withering view of With Love, Meghan after its release on Netflix.

Lady Campbell, who has been a vocal critic of the Sussexes, described the show ‘boring, ghastly and pretentious’ after watching what she described as ‘sludge’.

The 75-year-old has previously accused Meghan of being being ‘very calculating’ and a ‘narcissist’ after criticising her for ‘cutting off’ her father Thomas Markle when she joined the Royal Family.

Inside Meghan Markle’s £5m rented reality TV mansion

Viewers of With Love, Meghan have been promised a new intimate ‘at home’ experience with the Duchess of Sussex.

But the royal has in fact chosen to film the eight-episode series ‘With Love, Meghan’ in a kitchen and home that isn’t her own – despite living around the corner.

The 43-year-old duchess plucked for a sprawling estate just two miles from the £11million Montecito property she shares with Prince Harry and their children, Archie and Lilibet.

The mansion where her Netflix show was filmed last year, an idyllic $8million (£5million) estate nestled within a gated community, boasts eight acres of avocado trees and lemon groves and is owned by Montecito’s influential Cipolla family.

Tom and Sherrie Cipolla, fixtures in the high society circles of the American Riviera, are both in their 70s. They are prominent philanthropists with a $20million property portfolio, which includes a physical therapy practice with over $1.3million in annual sales.

Harper’s Bazaar – With Love, Meghan proves Duchess is right where she belongs

Harper’s Bazaar, the American women’s fashion magazine, has reported Meghan’s new Netflix series proves she is ‘right where she belongs’.

In an article published on the magazine’s website, it notes longtime fans have been ‘begging’ for the 43-year-old to return to her role as a ‘lifestyle aficionado’, describing the series as ‘rewarding return to self’ in the headline.

Remarking how Meghan has regained her ‘creative freedom’ after leaving royal duties, the piece reads:

Thoughtful, intentional content is truly where the duchess has always thrived (think of the Together cookbook!), and now it seems that her inner California girl that was put away for so long due to the duty of it all is awakening within her once again.
Curated crostinis and freshly-squeezed mimosas aside, one can’t help but notice that Meghan seems so happy—to be a mom, to feel safe at home, and to have creative freedom once again.

Among the royal’s most bizarre tips for ordinary people is adding sparkling water to scrambled eggs to make them more ‘fluffy’ and lathering towels in lavender oil to ‘treat yourself after a long day at work’.

‘Queasy and exhausting’: The Independent rates With Love, Meghan one star

The Independent has rated With Love, Meghan one star out of five, calling it ‘queasy and exhausting’.

Senior culture and lifestyle writer Katie Rosseinsky said the series feels like ‘a millennial blog come to life’ and called it the ‘TV version of The Tig’.

She added: ‘The show simultaneously strains for aspiration and relatability in a way that never gels.

‘The heady blend of aesthetic curation, inspiring truisms and those inescapable edible flowers might well leave you feeling a bit queasy – or simply worn out at the prospect of having to adequately perform gratitude for all the thoughtful touches involved in Meghan’s “guest experience” (“You filled this cellophane bag with peanut butter pretzels for me? How lovely!”).

‘After a few episodes, I need a lie down. Please don’t feel the need to pop a care package by the bed.’

Viewers highlight similarities between Meghan’s recipes and scenes to other shows

Eagle-eyed viewers of With Love, Meghan, have compared the Duchess’ recipes with others they’ve seen floating around online.

They have highlighted a string of similarities between the former royal’s ‘Ladybug Caprese Bruschetta’ to similar dishes were featured on the ‘Diary of a Mad Hausfrau’ travel and food blog back in July 2016.

Meghan’s beekeeping was also noted for being one of Kate’s favourite hobbies, with the Princess of Wales making her own honey.

Scenes of Meghan’s highly anticipated show have also been compared to a YouTube cooking show hosted by the Marchioness of Bath.

Emma Weymouth posts videos of her creations after launching the brand in 2015 using the backdrop of the original kitchens within Longleat House.

‘Will this series fly? For a laugh perhaps’: Evening Standard rates With Love, Meghan four stars

London-based newspaper, the Evening Standard, has rated With Love, Meghan four out of five stars.

Journalist Melanie McDonagh said that the great thing about the Netflix show is that ‘it’s all so simple’.

She writes: ‘As Meghan observes, it’s all about pimping up the little things – except she says it’s about putting that extra little bit of thought into it. A few finds on Etsy, a little careful purchase in the supermarket, and bingo, you too can do floral sprinkles and bug bread.

‘So, will this series fly? For laughs perhaps. But if you’re the kind of person who wants to be shown how to make a daisy chain or who gets a thrill from seeing the home life of our Duchess as she wants us to see it, or who wants tips on making pasta the way no Italian ever did (sitting on veg, in a frying pan cooked with water from a kettle), why it’ll be just your cup of tea. In a glass pot, natch.’

Duchess of Sussex is filmed dancing with friend Delfina Blaquier while on hike

Meghan showed off her cheerful side as she was seen dancing around with her close friend Delfina Blaquier while on a hike.

While leaving their dough to rise, Meghan suggested that she and Delfina go on a walk to enjoy the picturesque Californian scenery.

The Duchess then spoke Spanish and said: ‘Lista?’ This translates to asking if someone is ready to go in English.

As they climbed the mountains with rescue dog Pula, Meghan suggested they put some music on.

She and Delfina were then filmed jumping and dancing around the dirt path as they enjoyed the sun.

‘It is hot out here but I’ve got some cool things for us back at the house,’ Meghan said.

‘An exercise in narcissism’: The Telegraph rates With Love, Meghan two stars

The Telegraph has rated the Duchess of Sussex’s new Netflix show, With Love, Meghan two out of five stars.

Anita Singh, the newspaper’s arts and entertainment editor, wrote that the series is an ‘exercise in narcissism’ and described it as ‘insane’.

The journalist notes that the Duchess doesn’t appear to be good at cooking, despite the series being centred around what she whips up in the kitchen.

Singh said: ‘One of the oddest things about With Love, Meghan is that parts of it are a cooking show – think Gwyneth Paltrow does Saturday Kitchen – but she doesn’t appear to be very good at cooking, or particularly to enjoy it, other than arranging vegetables and fruit on platters.’

‘[Harry] tells her she did a great job and then Meghan makes a toast, which is a wonderful exercise in narcissism: “I just want to raise a glass to you guys…. Thank you for loving me so much.” There’s just time to squeeze in a plug for her business too. That intentional jam is coming to a shop near you.’

The mother-of-two revealed that she uses sparkling water to scramble her eggs during her series, With Love, Meghan.

The Duchess was making fried chicken with chef Roy Choi when she asked: ‘Do you ever put cold sparkling water in your eggs before you scramble them?’

Roy, who appeared puzzled, looked at her and said: ‘No.’

She then responded: ‘Same sort of effect [as the fried chicken]. Helps them rise, get a little fluffy.’

Roy then said: ‘Really? I’m going to do that.’

The former royal told him to only add a tiny splash when making the dish.

‘I’m Sussex now’: Awkward moment Meghan corrects pal Mindy Kaling after she called her Markle

This is the awkward moment the Duchess of Sussex corrects her friend after she calls her ‘Meghan Markle’.

The Office star Mindy Kaling appeared in her new Netflix series in episode two, where she shows how to host a children’s party.

The Duchess of Sussex called herself a ‘latchkey kid’ who ‘grew up with a lot of fast food and TV tray dinners’.

But Mindy seemed to get under Meghan’s skin with her response, as she said: ‘I don’t think anyone in the world knows that Meghan Markle has eaten Jack In The Box and loves it.’

Trying to hide her frown with a smile, she replied: ‘It’s so funny you keep saying Meghan Markle, you know I’m Sussex now.’

As Mindy looked confused, Meghan continued: ‘You have kids and you go “No, I share my name with my children”. I didn’t know how meaningful it would be to me but it just means so much to go “This is OUR family name. Our little family name”.

After being corrected, Mindy awkwardly responded: ‘Well, now I know and I love it.’

‘Kiss the Netflix deal goodbye’: Guardian journalist calls Meghan’s show ‘pointless’

A Guardian journalist has commented on Meghan’s new series and tells the Sussexes to ‘wave their $100m deal Netflix deal goodbye’.

Stuart Heritage, who writes predominately about film, TV and music, said With Love, Meghan may be the ‘final thing she makes for Netflix’.

He wrote: ‘The problem is that nobody wants to see Meghan making decorative ladybird crostini with Mindy Kaling.

‘With Love, Meghan is the sort of gormless lifestyle filler that, had it been made by the BBC, would be used to bulk out episodes of Saturday Kitchen.

‘There is a version of Meghan that people want to see on screen. But it isn’t the joylessly joy-filled rictus version of With Love, Meghan. No, they want to see the furious, righteous Meghan from Harry & Meghan. In other words, what they want is a proper Meghan reality show.’

Duchess reveals Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet ‘take their gardening very seriously’

Meghan revealed in her show that her children ‘take their gardening very seriously’, and that they each have their own tools.

During the show, Meghan said Archie and Lilibet have their own mini gardening tools, despite both being under the age of six.

‘Our kids have real sets, they take their gardening very seriously,’ she said in the second episode.

‘We have them every day because I think that’s how our kids love eating vegetables, you make it present beautifully with your eyes first,’ she said.

The former actress said that she also made her infamous jam with her three-year-old daughter.

‘Lili and I actually made this batch together,’ she said in their fifth episode of the show, as she scooped strawberry preserve into cups.

‘She picked these with me, she is like no mamma I will stir it .. but she is proud.. that part feels good’.

Look away Italians! Meghan’s BIZARRE way of making a pasta dish

The Duchess of Sussex also revealed her unconventional way of cooking a pasta dish, which may leave some Italians baffled.

Ten minutes into the first episode of ‘With Love, Meghan’, sees her tackling a dish called ‘skillet spaghetti’, which she tells viewers she regularly cooks for Prince Harry and her children.

Meghan reveals to her friend, make-up artist Daniel Martin, how the US twist on the Italian staple is a favourite with Archie, five, and Lilibet, three.

Traditional Italian methods might see the pasta submerged in a large pan of salted boiling water, but here, the Duchess simply pours ‘three cups’ of boiling water onto the spaghetti and then puts a lid on.

The Duchess also calls the popular Italian pasta ‘noodles’ at one point.

Meghan said: ‘When I make this, I make it for my family’ before clarifying ‘not that my children are eating heaps of noodles but I will make enough so that I can put leftovers in their lunchbox.’

Referring to her old lifestyle blog, The Tig, she added: ‘This skillet spaghetti would have been on there’.

Meghan finally answers the mystery of her ‘ranked’ jars of strawberry jam

In her new Netflix series, the Duchess also addressed the mystery of the jam jars she sent out to some of her closest friends last year.

Mindy Kaling, 45, was one of the recipients of Meghan’s homemade strawberry jam when it was then called American Riviera Orchard. Last month, Meghan announced on Instagram that her brand had been renamed to As Ever.

‘When I received that in the mail, a box of your preserves, it was probably one of the most glamourous moments of my life,’ Mindy gushed.

However, the TV actress was thrown by the labelling on it that said ’50’ because ‘I’m a very hierarchical person’.

‘Does having a lower number make me more special? Does having…’ she trailed off before Meghan replied: ‘I did not think about it. It was not a ranking.’

‘It was just let me share them and then, people started to take it very personally,’ she continued.

‘Anyone who got one of those 50 jars that I was making on my stove, in my actual kitchen, at my house, I hope they all felt like “No, I want to share this with you”,’ the mother-of-two said.

Good Morning Britain’s Richard Arnold appears to poke fun at Meghan’s rainbow platter

Good Morning Britain appeared to poke fun at the mixed fruit ‘rainbow platter’ which featured in Meghan’s new Netflix show.

The Duchess said it’s a ‘real delight and luxury’ to be a ‘present parent’ as she made a rainbow-themed fruit salad.

In the clip, she was filmed putting together colourful pieces of fruit on a large board as well as a smaller version in a bowl.

Good Morning Britain then appeared to mock the Duchess with their own version of the platter. Richard Arnold showed off his ‘rainbow platter’ complete with an unpeeled banana, sprinkles of cornflakes and browning apple chunks.

After showing a clip of Meghan’s documentary to viewers, the camera then cut to Richard laughing as he joked: ‘Here’s one we made earlier’ as he gestured to a chopping board filled with cubed apples, grapes and prunes.

He then added: ‘Sprinkled with cornflakes, tomatoes, I would advise – ‘ at which point Susana Reid jumped in shock and questioned whether the fruit display did indeed include tomatoes.

As he showed off his finished plate of fruit complete with sprinkles, he said to the camera: And there you have it, from Dickie, With Love.’

Susanna then jumped in and said: ‘In the old days it used to be called a fruit salad’.

‘I would do anything for Guy’: Meghan speaks about her beloved late Beagle

The Duchess’ beloved late pet is seen in her new series, With Love, Meghan.

She revealed that her rescue dog Guy, who she adopted in 2015, had passed away in January this year.

In the show, the pup is seen relaxing in his dog bed inside Meghan’s Netflix studio kitchen, which is close to where she and Harry live.

The former royal said: ‘I would do anything for Guy and he knows it. He can have whatever he wants because he is whatever kind of Guy you need him to be, depending on the day.

‘Guy is just always there, he’s my shadow and he’s going to be for a very, very long time. Guy has been with me since I lived in Toronto.

‘He was found in the woods in Kentucky and he’s since moved with me to the UK, back to Canada, to California. Guy has a lot of stories to tell.’

Meghan says she ‘under-salts’ dishes for Harry

Meghan also revealed that Harry puts salt on ‘all of his dishes,’ adding that she likes to ‘under-salt’ the food she cooks because of this.

She was cooking up some frittata, an Italian egg-based dish similar to an omelette, alongside her close friend actress and comedian Mindy Kaling.

Mindy – who was interviewed on the Duchess’ now-defunct podcast Archetypes in 2022 – asked for her secret to a perfect egg dish.

She said: ‘Here’s my thing with making egg dishes, you can’t taste it to tell if it’s too salty until after it is cooked.

‘I never know how to season it so it comes out too salty or not salty enough. How did you season this so perfectly?’

Meghan responded: ‘I have a family and a husband who, no matter what meal is put in front of him, before he tastes it, puts salt on. So I try to under-salt.’

Mindy then joked: ‘I love knowing that your husband loves it salty,’ before the Duchess popped a bottle of bubbly for them to drink.

Duchess speaks about ‘healing’ with millionaire neighbour Vicky Tsai

In episode seven, Meghan also spoke about ‘healing’ when she discussed Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery, with her neighbour Vicky Tsai.

The Duchess told her: ‘You gave me this idea, I think it’s so meaningful, that if you break something that is precious and valuable, it’s not broken. That that fracture, and you taught me this, that that fracture actually makes it more beautiful, that break makes it more beautiful.

‘And I just think that it felt really symbolic of saying to anyone if you’ve been through something, you’re not broken. It can be fixed, it can be sealed and healed at the same time’.

Ms Tsai then says: ‘Or celebrated because it’s what makes you beautiful… perfect isn’t beautiful. Things that have lived and been dropped and put back together again are more beautiful.’

Meghan seemingly makes subtle dig at Royal Family

Meghan seemingly made a subtle dig at the Royal Family at the end of her Netflix show.

She previously accused royal aides of preventing her from expressing her true self during her time in Britain.

The Duchess closed the last episode with a speech to guests including her husband Prince Harry, saying: ‘I just want to raise a glass to you guys. This feels like a new chapter that I’m so excited that I’m able to share and I’ve been able to learn from all of you.

‘So I just thank you for all the love and support. And here we go, there’s a business! All of that is part of that creativity that I’ve missed so much, so thank you for loving me so much and celebrating with me.’

Meghan – whose mother Doria Ragland was in attendance too – is also heard saying to Harry about the party she organised for the show: ‘It’s good, right?’ He says: ‘Well done. You did a great job.’ Meghan adds: ‘Thank you.’ And Harry then says: ‘I love it.’

Meghan spoke about her joy in preparing guest rooms in her £11million Montecito home.

She said: ‘Whenever I have someone come and stay, one my favourite things to do is to prep the guest room. I think about the two places of the guest experience once they’ve gone into their room.

‘What’s at the side of the bed for them? That’s their good morning and goodnight moment. And what is in the bathroom for them so they can have a beautiful soak and a nice bath at the end of the night.’

Meghan then decided to make bath salts to give to her pal along with a small base of flowers which she called ‘bedside blooms’.

A glimpse inside Meghan’s £20,000 Netflix kitchen

The eight-part series has been filmed inside a £5million mansion on a sprawling estate just two miles from the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes’ £11million Montecito home.

Inside, Meghan is filmed cooking, baking, cocktail making, flower arranging and party planning using its kitchen’s lavish £15,000 eight-hob Thermador oven.

Dangling elegantly from her wrist as she chops up fruit with a £134 knife is a luxurious £21,400 Cartier ‘tank Francaise’ gold watch and a £4,544 Cartier yellow gold bracelet.

Working on the hob of the Thermador oven, Meghan is seen preparing food in a top-of-the-range white Le Creuset pan, worth between £180 and £250.

The property features the centerpiece of the estate: a spacious kitchen with Caesartone countertops, estimated to cost about £200 to £550 per square metre.

Meghan also uses an array of state-of-art Le Creuset cookware, all in matching white. A single pot online retails for about £180-£250.
