Macy Gray has finally opened up about why she stormed off The Masked Singer – slamming both ITV and her rival performer Example. 

The ‘I Try’ hitmaker, 58, shocked viewers back in January when she stormed off stage before her identity was revealed by host Joel McDermott after realising that she was in the bottom two with Bear (Example). 

She finally opened up about the jaw-dropping incident when asked if she has always been a competitive person.  

Macy said: ‘Yes, I’m up there singing my heart out [as Toad in the Hole] and some guy comes around and they picked the guy and the guy couldn’t even sing.

‘Yes, what am I doing here.’ 

The star said that she was ‘so offended’ that Example had been allowed to stay in the competition over her and described her overall appearance on the show as being ‘not fun’.

Viewers of The Masked Singer were shocked by Macy’s comments and took to social media to share their outrage, writing: ‘”This guy couldn’t even sing” bold coming from her. [sic]’;

‘Yeah extremely bold. Talk about [spoiled] brat syndrome.’;

‘WTF! Of course example could sing! That’s rich coming from her…’;

‘I honestly find it so funny that she said that it pays well. People would give an arm and a leg to do this show.’;

‘What is the point of keeping her in the show (on the UK when most of the panel knew it was her) when it was obvious it was her? And to say Bear couldn’t sing all because she’s petty.’ 

Macy was reportedly ‘totally blindsided’ after being voted off the UK edition of the show so quickly after reaching the final of its US counterpart in 2023.  

While, to viewers, it appeared that Macy quickly returned to the stage after storming off, it turns out that it took bosses an HOUR behind the scenes to actually convince her to do it.  

A whistleblower said: ‘This has never happened on The Masked Singer before. When Macy stormed off stage everyone was frozen in shock but as soon as she reached backstage, crew removed her mask so they could talk her down.

The insider added: ‘Macy was almost shell-shocked to start with and was basically gutted to be out so early because she really enjoyed being on the American version – when obviously she did brilliantly – so was totally blindsided.

‘It was the shock of it for her as well as the upset and in that moment she had a very raw, human reaction and wanted out.

‘For a professional performer to reach that point shows how badly she felt.

‘Obviously The Masked Singer isn’t a singing competition and is just a bit of fun, so being voted off was no indication of her talent, but no one could believe a global superstar like Macy had lost it like this.

‘It took everyone backstage ages to talk her round and poor Joel was on stage essentially doing a stand-up routine to try and keep things under control. 

‘Eventually they managed to persuade Macy to go back on stage and be properly unmasked and sing for the last time.

‘But it was totally wild.’
