A man who proposed to his girlfriend at the finish line of her marathon has sparked furious debate online, with some even accusing him of ‘stealing her moment’.
Sarah John took to TikTok earlier this week to share the moment her long-term boyfriend popped the question just as she reached the finish line of the Long Course Weekend race in Wales.
The Welsh TikToker, who describes herself as a lover of ‘running and everything fitness’, has now amassed nearly two million views on a clip of her reaching the finish line of the lengthy run.
Last June, the fitness fanatic completed The Long Course Weekend, which includes a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile cycle, and a 26.2 mile run, over a period of three days.
But on the day of her marathon at the Pembrokeshire festival, Sarah was met with an enormous surprise when she jogged over the finished line, only to discover her boyfriend Tom down on one knee holding a ring.
However, not everyone was convinced by the romantic display, with fuming viewers insisting that Tom had ‘stolen’ her moment and ‘could have waited for another day’.
‘Hmmm…should’ve let her have her moment to reflect and celebrate HER achievement, that proposal could’ve waited another day!’, one wrote.
‘Am I the only one who thought he stole her moment?’ said another.

A third wrote: ‘I dunno, can’t he let her just have that moment.’
However, not everyone agreed that Tom had robbed the special moment, with many pointing out that Sarah appeared ‘happy’ in the clip.
One commenter protested: ‘These comments are wild. If my partner did this I’d be over the moon, wouldn’t even cross my mind that he’d ‘stolen my moment’. People need to lighten up. She clearly loved it, look how happy she is.’
Another hit back saying, ‘How did he steal her moment? He just made her moment a thousand times more memorable by wanting her to be his wife!’
‘That’s heightened her moment! He did that for her, not for himself because he knew she would love it,’ an approving third added.
Another said: ‘The way he was at the finish line, showing that he knew you would finish the marathon is true support and he must be so proud of you.’
In the video, Sarah was seen jogging towards the finish line looking miraculously unflustered.
But as she spotted her partner kneeling down holding a ring, she immediately bursted into tears.
Overwhelmed by the moment, the marathon runner forgot to stop the timer on her fitness watch, but was swiftly reminded by Tom who then took her by the hand to pop the question.
A delighted Sarah was seen saying ‘yes’ before throwing her arms around her new fiancé.

The TikToker initially shared the moment nearly a year ago, after the race took place in June. At the time, she captioned the moment: ‘Started the Marathon as a girlfriend, finished it as a fiancé.’
She’s now reshared the post as part of a TikTok trend, where users liken spectacular moments to a Hozier song.
And despite the responses, Sarah insisted that the proposal did not taint her experience of completing the marathon.
Replying in the comments, the marathon runner insisted the moment was ‘100% perfect’, adding that her new fiancé was ‘the best’.
‘He knows me better than these strangers on the internet and I couldn’t imagine anything more perfect for me,’ she added.
She even said that her ‘heart rate peaked in that moment’, despite having just completed the 26.2 mile race.
Sarah, who since becoming engaged has run an ultra marathon, described it as the best day of her life.
‘What was already an incredible day running my second marathon turned in to the best day of my life at the finish line,’ she said.
