Two thieves brazenly ransacked a freezer at a petrol station in north London stealing hoards of ice creams and lollies.

Startled shoppers watched on as the shoplifters filled a large blue bag with the frozen goods while one asked ‘Is this how cheap you are?’

The pair – who were clad in black – grabbed the ice creams from a Walls chest freezer at the Sainsbury’s petrol station on Ealing Road, in Alperton, near Wembley yesterday.

One, wearing a cap and a Covid-19-style facemask pulled down, ransacked the freezer while his hooded accomplice held the bag open for him to put them in.

A customer in the garage filmed the shoplifters in a 19-second video on his phone that has now been posted on social media.

A member of staff who works in the petrol station told MailOnline that all the ice creams in the freezer were taken but they didn’t know the total value of the goods.

He said: ‘No way man.

‘You can’t steal his ice creams, buddy.

‘Come on, man.’

‘B****** disgrace.’

Another, named Mike, said: ‘Some proper tramps about.’

The incident comes as shoplifting in the UK has risen to its highest ever level amid complaints the crime has essentially been decriminalised.

A total of 430,104 offences were recorded by police in the year to December 2023, up by more than a third (37 per cent) from 315,040 in the previous 12 months.

The figure is the highest since current records began in the year to March 2003, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Retail bosses have accused ministers of allowing shoplifting to become effectively decriminalised, with many police forces failing to attend the majority of reports and failing to gather any evidence when they do.

Under 40 per cent of shoplifting reports were attended by the Met between April 2022 and April 2023, figures released earlier this year revealed.

Earlier this week, dramatic footage emerged of a shoplifter getting hit by a car as he tried to flee the scene of a robbery.

One customer in the busy London store filmed brave Tesco staff trying to thwart two crooks stealing tobacco and alcohol from behind the tills.

The two thieves, clad in black, got behind the checkout area and started loading bottles of spirits and packs of rolling tobacco into their bags.

One appeared to escape with no difficulty, but the second became trapped temporarily by a combination of customers, Tesco employees and security.

As he eventually wrestles his way out, after some bottles fell out the hold all and shattered on the floor, one customer can be heard saying: ‘Call an ambulance, he’s just been hit by a car.’

The two-minute video begins with voices urging people to ‘go, go, go,’ and ‘call the police’.

The newly-elected Labour government has vowed to crack down on shoplifting and restore trust in the police.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told the Mirror: ‘Community concern about antisocial behaviour, rising street crime and shoplifting have soared, but there are fewer neighbourhood police on our streets and there is a growing fear that when things go wrong, no one will come and nothing will be done.’

‘This Labour Government of service is determined to make it a mission – one that rises above party politics – to work with police forces and communities to restore confidence and trust.’
