Two sisters have been jailed for brutally attacking their friend on a birthday night out and leaving her unconscious on the street.

Shocking CCTV footage captured Charlotte, 34, and Katrina Whitham, 30, violently attacking the 38-year-old woman twice.

The video shows the duo punching, kneeing, and pulling their friend’s hair following a verbal dispute on August 3 on Watergate Street, in Chester, Cheshire.

At the time they were out with the friend to celebrate Katrina’s birthday and had spent the previous nine hours drinking.

The sisters then walk away before Charlotte can be seen slamming their friend to the ground after the victim shouted at them and Katrina lets off a brutal burst of 23 punches to her face.

Katrina then stamps on the woman’s arm twice trying the break it before trampling on her head – leaving her unconscious as passers-by rush to the victims aid.

Following the attack, the sisters appeared at Chester Crown Court on December 17, where Charlotte was jailed for two years and Katrina, eight months.

It comes after Charlotte and Katrina, both of Chester, pleaded guilty to assault on a person causing actual bodily harm.

Within 13 minutes of the assault the pair had been tracked down and arrested by Cheshire Police after CCTV camera operators notified officers, the court heard.

Whilst being arrested, Katrina was witnessed saying ‘oh yeah, I have done that’, referencing the assault, the court heard.

Katrina denied having admitted she had assaulted the victim during their interviews with officers.

She went on to say that whilst she had been involved in a physical altercation with the victim she did not seriously injure her.

Charlotte answered no comment to all questions put to her and refused to watch the CCTV of her and her sister attacking the victim.

The sisters were subsequently charged and eventually pleaded guilty to the offence on Friday, November 7 despite their refusal to admit being involved in the assault.

Detective Constable Tim Butler, who led the investigation into the incident, said: ‘This nasty and violent assault doled out by Katrina and Charlotte Whitham resulted in someone they considered to be their friend left alone and unconscious in the middle of Chester city centre with very serious injuries.

‘With that in mind, following the conclusion of this investigation, I welcome the sentences handed to the Witham sisters.

‘I hope they spend their time behind bars to seriously consider their actions and what it means to be someone’s friend.

‘This case goes to show how a snap decision to turn to violence can have serious repercussions.

‘Their actions, obviously fuelled by the amount of alcohol they had consumed during the day of the incident, now means that they will be spending Christmas away from their respective families.’
