Oscar snubs 2026: Gwyneth Paltrow, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Avatar: Fire And Ash left out

  • Reading time:8 min(s) read

The Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday morning.

While Sinners, One Battle After Another and Marty Supreme did well, there were several shocking snubs.

One was Ariana Grande who was not named for her role as Glinda in Wicked: For Good in the Best Supporting Actress category. Her co-star Cynthia Erivo was also not included for Best Actress for her role as Elphaba.

Another was Gwyneth Paltrow, who was left off the list for her work on Marty Supreme opposite Timothee Chalamet, who was nominated for Best Actor. Also not nominated was Odessa A’Zion for Marty Supreme in the Best Supporting Actress.

Jennifer Lawrence received no Oscar love for her performance in Die, My Love. And Amanda Seyfried did not appear on the Oscar nominations list for her work in The Testament of Anne Lee.

Though the race car movie F1 did very well, even getting a Best Picture nod as well as Best Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound, its star Brad Pitt was not nominated.

And also not on the long list was the James Cameron film Avatar: Fire and Ash for Best Picture, though it was nominated in other categories.

The third Avatar movie has grossed $1.3 billion worldwide.

Adam Sandler did not get a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his work in Jay Kelly opposite George Clooney.

Paul Mescal was ignored for his work in Hamnet.

One Battle After Another had several Oscar nods – like Best Picture and Best Actor – but Chase Infinity was not recognized.

Train Dreams received many nods, including Best Picture, but its star Joel Edgerton did not receive an acting nod.

Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman announced the nominees in all 24 categories, including the new casting award, as it was viewed in a livestream from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The 98th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.

Oscar viewers will be seeing a familiar face as Conan O’Brien will be returning to host a year after he helped last year’s ceremony draw the biggest audience in five years.

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has smashed Oscars history — landing a whopping 16 nods and becoming the most‑nominated film of all time.

The vampire thriller toppled the previous record of 14 nods, held jointly by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land, after months of hype positioning it as a major contender.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another — long tipped as the frontrunner — wasn’t far behind, scoring 12 nominations. Joachim Trier’s Norwegian drama Sentimental Value picked up nine, while Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet in what many expect to be a winning performance, earned eight.

It was also a huge morning for international cinema.

Both Sentimental Value and Brazil’s The Secret Agent made it into the Best Picture race as well as Best International Feature. Trier landed a Best Director nod, while The Secret Agent star Wagner Moura continued his awards‑season streak with a Best Actor nomination following his Golden Globes win.

Coogler’s Sinners dominated across the board, earning recognition for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, and Best Supporting Actor for Delroy Lindo, along with screenplay, cinematography, editing, production design and more.

Anderson’s One Battle After Another also scored major nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and multiple supporting nods for Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn.

Chalamet, meanwhile, cemented his awards‑season momentum with a Best Actor nomination for Marty Supreme, joining a category packed with heavyweights including DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, Jordan and Moura.

Emma Stone, Jessie Buckley, Renate Reinsve, Kate Hudson and Rose Byrne lead the Best Actress race, while the supporting categories are dominated by Sentimental Value, Sinners and One Battle After Another.

KPop Demon Hunters also made a strong showing, earning nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song with Golden.
