Queen Letizia of Spain gave one of her wardrobe staples an elegant twist today, when she inaugurated an art show in Madrid.

The 52-year-old royal picked a calf-length, navy blue woollen dress, cinched at the waist with a thin black belt, for her appearance at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando on Tuesday, October 29.

Inspired by Spanish painter Goya’s series Los Disparates (The Follies), multidisciplinary artist Lita Cabellut’s new exhibition is a meditation on the human condition and ‘exposes the views of both artists’ through their respective artistic languages.

The awards share their name with Princess Leonor, who is the Princess of Asturias.

Queen Letizia opted for smart casual for the outing, in a high neck, cream jumper and a tailored blazer in a grey and white chequered pattern.

She completed her ensemble with a pair of black trousers, and kept her brunette locks sleek around her shoulders, with her make-up in her typical natural style.

Her daughters – Leonor and Sofia – were both in blue jeans, with the elder opting for a black T-shirt and a similar jacket to her mother’s, but in a darker colourway.

The youngest Spanish royal wore a dark blue jumper for her family’s trip to Sotres.

The Princess of Asturias Awards are a series of annual prizes awarded in Spain by the Princess of Asturias Foundation – previously the Prince of Asturias Foundation – to individuals, entities or organisations from around the world who make notable achievements in the sciences, humanities and public affairs.

Each recipient present at the ceremony receives a diploma, a sculpture expressly created for the awards by Spanish sculptor Joan Miró, and a pin with the emblem of the Foundation.

There is also a monetary prize of 50,000 euros for each category, this amount is shared if the category has more that one recipient.

The Spanish royals were also out in full force last Friday, when they attended a concert to usher in an awards ceremony in Oviedo in northern Spain

Queen Letizia and Crown Princess Leonor looked stunning in complementary blue outfits, while King Felipe VI, 56, also opted for a double-breasted suit in a shade of navy.

Only the Spanish royal couple’s youngest daughter, Infanta Sofia chose black over a shade of blue for the concert held at the Prince Felipe Auditorium in Oviedo ahead of the Princess of Asturias Awards.

Queen Letizia was typically chic in a bright blue, form-fitting midi dress. With its asymmetric neckline and subtle ruching, the long-sleeved number flattered her petite frame.

She teamed her striking dress with gold, pointed toe kitten heels and a matching clutch bag.

Princess Leonor, the future monarch who was recently awarded the title of Honorary Mayoress of Oviedo, matched her mother’s elegance in a pale blue tulle skirt printed with flowers.

The future queen of Spain expertly teamed the elaborate number with a simple black crew neck top and finished her ensemble with a pair of patent black kitten heels.

She wore her long, blond hair in loose waves and kept her make-up simple, following Letizia’s lead with dark read lipstick and dark eye make-up.
