1979 Ford Escort RS2000 Mk2

Estimated price: £25,000 to £30,000

Offered directly from Richard Hammond, this 1972 Fast Ford was jointly developed with Ford of Germany – unlike the less sophisticated Mk1 Escort designed by Ford of Great Britain.

Recently restored by The Smallest Cog Workshop – Mr Hammond’s car restoration service in Hereford – the car has undergone body restoration, suspension and brake refurbushment, mechanical servicing and a refinishing in Ford Midnight Blue. It’s also had a full new interior rework by Aldridge Trimming.

The RS2000 used a 2-litre, four-cylinder, SOHC, longitudinally-mounted Pinto engine and was capable of doing 110mph and 0-60mph in 8.9 seconds back in 1976.

Estimates put the combined number of Alpine Tourers and its predecessor (the Hancock & Warman built Tourer) between 175-200 units, the majority being Alpine models.

Richard Hammond purchased his in 2019, and he has enjoyed using it on Herefordshire roads, with it recently serviced and maintained in good running order.

The low production numbers, combined with the confusion surrounding chassis numbers from that era, make genuine examples highly sought after by collectors.

And this 1933 example benefits from a continuous history and period upgrades including triple bronze-bodied carburettors, 10-inch headlamps and a four-speed ‘silent third’ gearbox, and offers genuine four-seat touring capability.
