Malia Obama was spotted enjoying a smoke break with a friend in Los Angeles on Friday, just a few weeks after her younger sister, Sasha, was seen puffing on a cigarette.

The 25-year-old screenwriter was dressed for fall in a cozy blue cardigan sweater with a colorful geometric pattern and wide-leg tailored dress pants paired with black lug-sole boots. 

Malia, who has been smoking for years, had a large bag slung over her shoulders and a stainless steel water bottle tucked under her arm as she enjoyed a cigarette.

She was standing in a parking lot, next to a black SUV, while chatting with a friend, who was wearing a plaid blazer, jeans, and sneakers.

The former first daughter was fresh-faced and her long rust-colored braids were worn loose around her shoulders. 

It is possible that she is back in the writers’ room and on a work break after the nearly five-month-long Writers Guild of America strike ended last week. 

Malia moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a screenwriter after graduating from Harvard University in 2021.    

She scored a lucrative position as a writer on Donald Glover’s Amazon show, Swarm, which premiered earlier this year. 

The Chicago native previously worked as an intern on Lena Dunham’s HBO series Girls in 2015 and at The Weinstein Company in 2017.

Malia was also photographed leaving a convenience store on Friday with her cellphone and car keys in her hand. 

The afternoon outing comes a couple of weeks after her sister, Sasha, 22, was spotted smoking in her car after enjoying a solo spa trip in mid-September. 

The Obama girls seem to have inherited their father’s taste for nicotine.

Former President Barack Obama was also a regular smoker prior to entering the White House and was seen chewing on Nicorette gum several times to fight the habit. 

In his memoir ‘A Promised Land,’ he credits his daughter Malia with getting him to quit, writing that she ‘frowned’ at him after ‘smelling a cigarette on my breath.’

He said he ‘ceaselessly’ chewed nicotine gum to stop.

Sasha followed in her big sister’s footsteps when she moved to Los Angeles last year after transferring from the University of Michigan to the University of Southern California to finish college.

She graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, but her next moves remain unknown. 

The sisters share an apartment, and they are often seen out and about in LA — both together and apart. 

Malia was photographed running some errands last Wednesday, including a stop at a party supply store, where she grabbed a pack of glow sticks, among other items.  

The outing came just days after she was caught cozying up to a mystery man behind a tree after having lunch at Erewhon together. 

Malia and her friend were also seen walking away, but it’s unclear if they were headed in separate directions

Her latest outing came just days before her parents celebrated their milestone 31st wedding anniversary, with the former first couple sharing gushing tributes to one another online – despite spending the day apart. 

The former President of the United States, 62, and his wife, 59, tied the knot at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago on October 3, 1992 – 31 years ago.

However, despite Michelle writing in her tribute post that she ‘loves going through life with [Barack] by her side’, when it came to their anniversary, the pair were in fact separated by thousands of miles – with the former President in the US, while his wife continued her lengthy European vacation. 

Michelle was pictured relaxing on Steven Spielberg’s $250 million superyacht off the coast of Italy alongside the acclaimed director and his wife, Kate Capshaw, as well as Tom Hanks and his spouse, Rita Wilson – while Barack was spotted across the globe in California.

Photographers caught her swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling with her famous friends over the last few days. 

Barack, on the other hand, was pictured leaving a restaurant in Beverly Hills over the weekend. 

The last time the married couple were seen together was at the US Open in Queens, New York, in early September. 

Barack and Michelle were also apart when a former conman came forward to make wild claims about the former President’s sexual preferences. 

Last month, con man Larry Sinclair alleged that the politician performed oral sex on him twice in Chicago in 1999, and that he witnessed him buying and smoking cocaine during an appearance on former Fox host Tucker Carlson’s show. 

Larry – who has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions on forgery, fraud and larceny charges, and has served prison time in Arizona, Florida, and Colorado – first made the claims in 2008, while Barack was gearing up to run for President. 

At the time, his accusations were roundly condemned as an attempted political hatchet-job. He has never offered any proof of his claims against the former President.
