A woman has described how she was left hating her body after a dramatic 7st weight loss left her with excess skin and breasts ‘like golf balls in socks’.

Hannah, 36, from the Midlands, almost halved her body weight with diet and exercise, but stil felt unhappy with how she looked and decided to completely transform her body with £24,000 of cosmetic surgery.

Having always been a size eight, Hannah began eating for two during her first pregnancy, assuming the weight would simply drop off afterwards.

Then, after she had her daughter a few years later, she found she was wearing size 18 clothes to cover up all the lumps and bumps.

Hannah, who had reached more than 15st by this point, said: ‘At my heaviest, I lacked confidence, hated looking at myself in the mirror, didn’t like having photos taken and felt like I wasn’t myself.

‘I remember one day pulling everything out of my wardrobe and being so upset that nothing fit anymore. I was in floods of tears. Life shouldn’t be about what you look like, but it was also about how I felt. And I didn’t feel like me anymore.’

Hannah decided to get fit, but she lacked the motivation and avoided the problem for years. Then, one day, she put her trainers on and went running.

‘I just looked in the mirror one day and thought: ”Get a hold of yourself.” I could only run to the bottom of the drive at this point.

‘So I kept going each day, just a little bit further each time. After a few weeks, I was really pushing myself, started lifting weights and hired a personal trainer.

‘I also really looked at what I was eating. It was terrible. I was getting takeaways and loads of convenience foods. Fish and chips, Chinese, and pizza, so I started eating a more healthy, vegetarian diet, carefully reducing calories but not becoming too fixated on calorie counting.’

Over the course of four years of consistent exercise and healthy eating, she slimmed down to 8st.

Hannah said: ‘I felt physically amazing. I was fitter, and I loved my new figure. I also saw a massive improvement in my mental health, and I would encourage anyone else who is feeling down to start thinking about their physical health and exercise.’

However, after Hannah lost the weight, she was left with baggy skin around her breasts and belly which left her distraught by her own reflection.

Her breasts, which had been a double D pre-pregnancy were deflated and her confidence was on the floor.

She said: ‘I had to tuck my excess stomach skin into my trousers and excess skin had to be tucked into my bra. If I moved about, the excess skin would just end up hanging out and almost like an apron with my breasts. Because I’d lost the weight, I was more of a B cup. I can only describe them as like golf balls in socks.

‘If I bent over or moved, the skin constantly kind of came out, so I’d have to constantly tuck it away again. So I was still left with those confidence issues that I had pre-weight loss.

‘I was still wearing baggy clothes and living in jogging bottoms and hoodies. I couldn’t walk around naked. I didn’t wear sexy underwear.

‘It affected my intimacy with my husband at the time and I had to have the lights off when we had sex. I couldn’t get changed in front of anybody and I hated the way I looked. I hadn’t worn a bikini in 21 years.’

WHAT IS A TUMMY TUCK?

Known medically as an abdominoplasty, tummy tucks improve the appearance of the stomach.

Surgeons remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen, and tighten connective tissues.

The end result is a more toned look. Many women, and men, have the operation to boost their body image.

A tummy tuck is also the go-to option for women who have given birth and have a prolonged ‘mummy tummy’.

The surgery repairs the rectus diastasis – two abdominal muscles than can separate during pregnancy.

Figures show nearly 130,000 tummy tucks were performed in the US last year. There are nearly 3,000 performed privately in the UK each year.

The Mayo Clinic states: ‘Like any other type of major surgery, a tummy tuck poses a risk of bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia.’

It can also cause fluid to build-up beneath the skin, known as a seroma. They can become infected.

Hannah decided the only option was surgery; which flabbergasted her friends who could only see her ‘lovely figure’.

‘The recovery itself physically was so painful, but it was so worth it. I was bedbound for a week, but then it was a really smooth recovery and I didn’t get any infections.

‘After I recovered, people couldn’t believe how different I looked. And I felt amazing. Now my confidence is back, I feel like my old self again and like it’s changed my life for the better.

‘I have no regrets and I continue to exercise and eat well. And for the first time in 21 years, I can wear a bikini on the beach.’
