It may have been the TV event of the year, but eagle-eyed Gavin and Stacey fans have spotted a number of blunders in its final ever episode.

Viewers rejoiced on Christmas Day as they got the ending they had hoped for when Nessa and Smithy finally tied the knot in the sitcom’s finale.

But fans have called out a number of filming mistakes throughout the series, and mainly its finale.

One person noticed that in the big boat scene where Smithy asks Nessa to marry him, her earrings change – from a thing gold pair of hoops to a much chunkier set.

While others pointed out that the boat scene which was meant to be in Southampton looked like it was shot in Wales, as well as there being no conservatory at Pam and Mick’s house despite Smithy and Deano building one.

And in a harp back to a running theme throughout the series, fans asked why Bryn always comes in the back door of Gwen’s house – despite living across the street.

‘Why does Bryn always come in the back door when he lives across the way I don’t understand,’ a fan asked in a TikTok video.

‘He lives here [in front] but he comes in the back – and they’re terraced houses!’

But someone on Reddit appeared to answer that particular question swiftly, as they explained: ‘It’s a welsh traditions joke, especially where I’m from,Welsh people tend to go into a house from the back door, my dad still does it!’

Pointing out blunders in its finale episode, one social media user spotted that Nessa (Ruth Jones)’s earrings appear to be swapped out mid-scene.

They wrote: ‘Nessa’s earrings chaneg in the boat scene where Smithy asks her to ask him [to marry her] again.’

Meanwhile another fan queried why Pam and Mick don’t have a conservatory attached to their house, despite a whole plotline about it being built.

‘The lack of a conservatory at Pamela and Michael’s house despite Smithy and Deano (I guess Matthew Baynton was too busy with A Midsummer Night’s Dream) building on,’ they said.

Another major blunder in the Christmas Day special of the popular BBC sitcom came during Smithy’s stag night.

But someone on Reddit appeared to answer that particular question about Bryn swiftly, as they explained: 'It's a welsh traditions joke, especially where I’m from,Welsh people tend to go into a house from the back door, my dad still does it!'

The festive episode, which served as the show’s ‘finale,’ drew over 12 million viewers and featured plenty of drama.

But a continuity mistake occured when Mick Shipman (Larry Lamb) raised a toast to Smithy during their very boozy night out in the pub ahead of his planned wedding.

Mick was saying he considered Smithy to be his honorary second son, which was poignant as he and wife Pam (Alison Steadman) had been unable to conceive a second child.

But despite the heart warming scene, eagle-eyed viewers pointed out that Mick’s pint was half drunk in some shots but full in others.

Taking to social media, one viewer penned: ‘You need to watch yourself to see what happens to Mick’s pint next (no spoilers from me, it’s very well written…)’

‘Mick’s pint went from full to half to full during that toast’

‘Not just me then, I genuinely thought #mickspint would be trending this morning’

Fans have already flagged another major blunder in other scenes as the plot saw Smithy race from Essex to the Port of Southampton to stop Nessa from leaving the UK for a new job, culminating in their marriage.

However, viewers from Southampton pointed out that scenes set at the port and surrounding areas didn’t look authentic.

It is now believed that those scenes were filmed over 100 miles away in Wales – specifically at Newport Docks in Newport.

Taking to X, they wrote: ‘[Finale] was great but as someone from #Southampton, the perception of the port was completely wrong.’

‘[Episode] was just sheer perfection (glossing over the ‘Southampton’ docks location).’

Firstly, where on Earth is this? [crying laughing emoji] is not Southampton! Secondly, SOUTHAMPTON ARE MASSIVE EVERYWHERE WE GO!! #GavinAndStacey

‘Superb acting job by Newport Docks, playing Southampton docks on the #GavinAndStacey Christmas special.’

‘Disgusted. this is not our great Southampton’

‘The way they tried to pass Barry as Southampton made me laugh. Ain’t no part of Southampton looking like that.’

One user replied to let them know where it was actually filmed divulging: ‘And that Southampton docks was actually Newport docks’

This isn’t the first time the show has opted for Welsh locations to double as English settings.

Although Mick’s home is said to be in Billericay, Larry Lamb previously revealed that the original series was entirely filmed in Wales.

Speaking about the production to Radio Times, he explained: ‘Nobody offered us the opportunity to go to Essex.’

It comes as fans also spotted what Smithy’s jilted lover Sonia had been in before her Gavin and Stacey appearance.

As Laura returned to TV screens as Sonia, those who grew up in the 90s started to realise the actress’ other iconic role – Mysti from The Mysti Show.

The Mysti Show aired from April 2004 to December 2005.

The show saw Laura take on the role of a half-human half-fairy being called Mysti.

Each 20 minute episode saw Mysti ‘magic her own unique blend of entertainment and comedy drama with celebrity guests.’

In 2000, Laura featured in an episode of long-running hospital drama Casualty – the catalyst for a series of guest roles that would include appearances in The Bill, Doctors and That Mitchell And Webb Look.

It comes as fans also spotted Gavin And Stacey star Laura Aikman had previously starred in a hit 90s CBBC show

But in 2009 she secured the first of two recurring roles, as Lucy in hit BBC Three series Personal Affairs and – more significantly – in a return to Casualty, this time as Nurse May Phelps.

A third major TV role came in 2016, when Aikman was cast as Lorna Hutchinson for the tenth series of BBC drama Waterloo Road.

Other TV roles include guest appearances in Death In Paradise, Pramface, Citizen Khan and Bluestone 42 – where she met her husband Matt Kennard in 2015.

Laura’s return as Sonia was one that shocked nation as even her own parents did not know until they watched it on Christmas day.

The actress had been ‘hidden away’ in a separate hotel during filming after signing an NDA to protect the major plot twist.
