On the latest episode of Palace Confidential, Diary Editor Richard Eden calls for King Charles to cut his disgraced brother off from the royal purse once and for all, following Andrew’s High Court victory against Thames Valley Police.

Andrew’s legal team successfully challenged the warrants used to search his properties in a behind-closed-doors hearing on Thursday.

Thames Valley Police conceded the warrants relied on the wrong legal provision, and it remains to be decided at a future hearing whether the seized material, including personal effects, will be returned to the former prince.

Eden, alongside a panel of royal experts, agreed that while the legal victory is ’embarrassing’ for police, it ‘doesn’t get Andrew very far’ if his intention was to help salvage his image or delay the criminal investigation into his time as Trade Envoy.

Buckingham Palace insisted that none of the reported £1million a year the former Prince receives from King Charles has gone towards funding the legal challenge.

However, Eden told the YouTube show he was ‘sceptical’ of how the Palace could be so certain of this claim.

‘Andrew can do what he likes with [his allowance]’, he argued.

‘Sure, the King can say: ‘Look, I would really rather you didn’t spend my money on legal action’, but it’s a tricky one.

‘I have said on this programme before that I do not think the King should be giving him a penny, let alone £1 million a year.

‘Legal action, as everyone knows, is fearfully expensive – and so, if he’s not getting that money from his brother, that suggests Andrew has quite a lot of it. In which case, why is he receiving a million a year from the King?’

Royal Editor Rebecca English says she has been in contact with the Palace since the legal challenge became known to ask how they can be so sure none of the King’s money is funding it.

English said she received ‘no definitive answer’, describing their response as ‘very unsatisfactory’.

Columnist Robert Hardman defended the King’s generous provision for his brother, arguing a large chunk of it will likely go towards security.

He added that Andrew must be being ‘very careful’ with the money, as he cannot afford any more scandals to try Charles’s patience.

Thames Valley Police arrested Andrew in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office, over allegations he shared government information with Jeffrey Epstein while he was UK trade envoy; he was released under investigation, has not been charged, and denies wrongdoing.

‘I think a large part of the money from the King is spent on security’, Hardman said.

‘Andrew still needs security. Already, there was the altercation with the stranger, which is going through the courts at the moment.

‘One thing the King can do is audit how he’s spending his money and I think, if I was Andrew, I would be very careful about spending any of that allowance on this. The King can always turn off the taps.’
