Video footage shows the horrifying moment a ferry passenger who leapt onto shore as his boat came in to dock had his leg crushed between the ramp and the land.
The horror unfolded on the banks of the Tapajós River – one of the Amazon’s major tributaries – in Miritituba, Brazil, on Saturday morning.
Local media has identified the victim as 27-year-old Luiz Henrique da Silva Pantoja, with reports that his left leg had to be amputated following the crush.
The shocking accident was captured on CCTV footage, which shows how the man jumped the gate separating the cars from the ramp as the boat approached the port.
He walks down the ramp in a bid to be the first off the boat, but before he can jump ashore, loses his balance and suddenly slips into the gap between the ferry and the shore.

Pictures show the man doubled over in pain and gripping his leg, while other pictures show him on a small boat show how his left leg was covered in blood
As he falls into the narrow gap, he can be seen grabbing onto the edge of the wharf with his hands.
But before he can haul the rest of his body up onto the pier, the boat continues to plough into the shore, with its ramp pinning his legs against the wall.
Gruesome images from the aftermath show how one of his limbs is left a shredded, bloody mess, while the other is left with a deep cut.
Pictures show the man, who was wearing a red t-shirt and white shorts, doubled over in pain and gripping his leg.

Men who appear to be workers open the gate on the car ferry and rush towards the man, who is already surrounded by people who were onshore when the incident took place.

The crush victim was reportedly taken by speedboat to nearby Itaituba, where waiting emergency medics gave him first aid and took him to a local hospital.
Images taken of the man on a small boat show how his left leg was covered in blood as he was rushed for treatment. It is believed to have been amputated.
The shipping company which owns the ferry has reportedly released a statement saying its employees rushed to the passenger’s aid and called emergency services.
It added that it regrets what happened to the passenger and sent its best wishes for his recovery.
Local authorities are said to be investigating the accident.
