They’ve lived no more than a 12-minute walk away from each other since they were children.

But now there are 700 miles between England captain Harry Kane and his wife Kate Goodland after they decided she would not join him in Germany following his £104 million switch to Bayern Munich.

She and their four children will stay at their Hertfordshire mansion while he moves to Grunwald, an upscale suburb of Munich.

Friends of the couple, both 30, confirm the decision was made after Kate gave birth to their baby, Henry, last month at a private hospital in the UK. She will stay in this country to be close to both her own family and Kane’s parents.

Their eldest daughter Ivy, six, has also just started her first term at school in London. Their other children are Vivienne, five, and Louis, two.

The couple are also believed to have access to a private jet, making the journey from Germany back to the UK easier. One friend told The Mail on Sunday: ‘It was a case of two massive events happening at once – Kate was about to give birth, while Harry was making his big money move to Bayern.

‘Things might change, but for the time being, with the new baby, and school a consideration for the older child, Kate has decided to remain in this country.’ Kane has repeatedly stressed his wish to immerse himself in German life in interviews.

‘I want to take in the culture as much as possible,’ he said recently. ‘I’m fully open to learning the language.’

However at a press conference with the England team last week he admitted his language classes had yet to begin, with his teacher having only just returned from a break.

Harry and Kate, a professional fitness coach who studied sports science at university, began dating when they were 16.

They first met at the age of four when they both attended Larkswood Primary School in Chingford, East London, near to where they both lived.

They later went to Chingford Foundation School, whose former pupils include another England skipper, David Beckham and they soon began dating.

They married ten years later, in June 2019. Their decision for Kate to stay at home mirrors the one taken by Victoria and David Beckham when he moved to Spain to play for Real Madrid.

A heavily pregnant Kate was seen at Kane’s side at Luton Airport as he flew out to Munich to finalise his contract last month.

Speaking after he signed the deal, Kane said: ‘The family are due to go back to the UK on Monday, then we will organise how we play that [the birth]. We have not made a decision, I will talk to my wife about it.

‘There are lots of things to organise. Kids, school, places to live – we have to sort all of that.’
