As a 1970s rock chick, I’ve celebrated denim in all its guises. From sitting in a hot bath waiting for my jeans to shrink to begging my mother to sew flared panels into my £5.99 second-hand Fioruccis.
Now I’m in my 70s I embrace the versatility of this durable, stylish cloth with skirts, jumpsuits, jeans and dresses – and I wholeheartedly reject any idea that there’s an age cut-off for any of them. The darker indigo shades are chic and classy, while the stonewashed look works for casual.
Even better, unlike the denim of my youth, today’s fabric stretches, fits and doesn’t bleed dye all over your mum’s sofa.
Denim constantly reinvents, and as I cherish doing up the buttons and zips on every garment, it’s like welcoming an old friend.
A little tip…I never wash it, just sponge it down with love – don’t judge me!
Day to night white
These are the perfect, crisp basic for a patterned knit or a textured jacket. Stroll your way through Spring into Summer and beyond
These soft but rigid 100 per cent cotton denims are high rise with a barrel leg. Even a shortie like me – I’m five foot one – can rock the barrel cut if the proportions are right.

Vintage mid-blue rinse
The only nod to modern day in these Jigsaw jeans is the very subtle stretch of the fabric, which as those of us who remember it know was very much missing in the 1970s! Understated and classy
Echoes of my youth here. Wide leg – there will be NO return of the skinny in my wardrobe – with five pockets, and a retro mid-blue rinse they hit the ankle at the perfect point.

Elegant and chic midi dress
This ME + EM Midi dress is perfect. Smart but casual for day, throw on a jacket and cowboy boots for night and eat your heart out Yellowstone
I love a dress – it elongates the body and always looks pulled together. This fabulous, buttondown has an elasticated back panel. This is perfect for someone short-waisted, like me, as it magics up a waist for you.

Mother of all jeans
This traditional, mid-waist jean in stonewash is straight legged and just begging for a loafer or a kitten heel. Sorry, but I’m going to say it…sexy
I love this traditional, mid-waist jean in stonewash. This is a ‘hot’ brand (denim aficionados will be salivating) – look out for the classic touches like the ankle seam and the orange stitching.

Patch pockets for petites
These high-waisted jeans are so well-proportioned the flare, even on a shortie, hits mid foot. Clock the false hem and the higher waist, both fantastically retro
Thank you M&S for catering to us petites. These high-waisted jeans are so well-proportioned the flare, even on a shortie, hits mid foot. Clock the false hem and the higher waist, both fantastically retro.
Back in the day I would have worn an espadrille but now a nice chunky flatform elongates the leg perfectly. Groovy.
Tailored indigo jumpsuit
Dark denim is chic and, thank you Whistles, this jumpsuit comes in petite! The tailoring is perfection from the thick, wide belt to the length of the sleeves
Dark denim is chic and, thank you Whistles, this jumpsuit comes in petite! The tailoring is perfection from the thick, wide belt to the length of the sleeves and the flattering collared neckline. Also the full length zip means you are not struggling in and out every time you need to nip to the loo.
