Tory Lanez is now behind bars at the notorious North Kern State Prison – where multiple killings have taken place this year including an alleged murder by convicted serial killer Ramon Escobar.
The 31-year-old rapper, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in August for shooting his ex-lover, hip hop star Megan Thee Stallion.
He shot Megan in the feet during a drunken argument after a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s house in 2020 and was jailed for negligent discharge of a firearm, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm.
A judge in Los Angeles denied a request for him to be bailed last week pending the appeal of his conviction. Lanez’s attorneys had asked for him to live with his son and wife on bond instead of behind bars.
Now he is facing the harsh realities of prison life – with the California facility infamous for over-crowding, poor sanitation and flaring tensions between inmates.

Opened in 1993, the medium security facility is mainly used for processing prisoners before they are sent elsewhere.
However there have been reports that Lanez could serve the majority of his time in prison at the facility – which has seen several inmate deaths just this year.

In July, another man named Ricardo Saldivar was also found dead at the facility, with investigators probing the 25-year-old’s death as homicide.

As well as the recent deaths, North Kern has seen a string of serious incidents over the years, from escapes to armed attacks on guards and violence between inmates.
There has been ongoing racial and gang hostilities in the prison, with an ongoing source of the violence the two preeminent gangs, the Sureños and Paisas.
In 2020, a former inmate and sex offender was convicted in connection to a 2020 attack on two correctional officers.
In 2015, inmate Abelardo Morales of Riverside County was reported missing from the minimum security section of the prison.
In the same year, a guard was hit by gunfire as he walked the yard, with a bullet penetrating his stab-proof vest.
He was rushed to hospital but suffered only minor injuries. The gunshots are thought to have come from outside the prison.

North Kern is surrounded with an electric fence and two razor wire fences.
Like all inmates, Lanez will be able to take part in prison labor, with skilled and unskilled jobs at North Kern which pay as little as $0.08 and $0.30 an hour.
The facility might be a slight upgrade for Lanez, who began his sentence in the notorious LA Men’s Central jail, a violent and overcrowded prison where he was locked up alone for 22 hours a day.
At least 12 people have died in Los Angeles County jails since June 1, including Joseph Hutchinson was found stabbed to death in Men’s Central Jail on August 4.
