Keira Knightley has offered insights into her passions and politics in a new interview with Vanity Fair Italy as she shared her views on Brexit and climate change.

The actress, 39, who is starring in the new film Black Doves, opened up about her ‘left-wing artistic’ opinions in a candid conversation with the fashion magazine.

Keira revealed how she cried over the decision to leave the European Union during Brexit and shared her worries that the world will ‘explode’ due to climate change.

Speaking on Brexit, she said: ‘I campaigned for the remainside. I was in tears when Brexit happened. And I have no idea what is going to happen.

‘But I really hope that, from now on, there will be better relations between the EU and Britain: the bad relationship was just ridiculous, particularly at a point when we needed to work together to solve such big problems.’

Sharing her concerns about climate change, Keira went on: ‘That and climate change. I mean, I’m worried that the world will explode!

‘I always tell my daughters to grab happiness wherever they can find it, but I’m aware it won’t be easy with all these situations getting out of control.’

Elsewhere, Keira opened up about her opinion on paternity leave in the UK, which she claimed was a ‘ridiculous system’ because dads only get two weeks off.

She said: ‘We just have to look up at the Scandinavian countries: that’s how you bring dads into childcare more. However, if I look at my group of friends, I see things are evolving: when I bring my kids to school, all of the dads are there. It’s easily fifty-fifty, but I’m aware I’m talking about a very left-wing artistic group of people. We’re all very progressive.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Keria admitted that she’s backtracked on her controversial choice to ban her daughters from watching Disney films because she considered them to be too patriarchal.

Keria is married to musician James Righton, 41, and the couple share children Edie, nine, and Delilah, four.

In 2018, she made headlines over her shock decision to ban them from the movies and there was huge backlash to her revelation

At the time she said it didn’t sit well with her that because the female characters are always ‘rescued by men’.

But in the interview where she discussed her parenting style she said her firm former rule has now gone out the window.

Keira admitted that Covid ‘ruined all of her ideas’ and her eldest has now seen all of the Disney films. Keira added that her eldest is already aware of calling out the old fashioned gender stereotypes in some of the Disney films.

Keira previously revealed she banned her daughter Edie from watching Disney classics Cinderella and Little Mermaid because the characters are ‘rescued by men’.

During an appearance on Ellen, the screen star proved to be every inch the doting mother as she insisted she would support her daughter in ‘anything she wants to do’ with her future career.

She also said: ‘She’s banned from watching Cinderella, as the film is about waiting around for a rich guy rescue her – no, rescue yourself!

‘She’s also banned from watching Little Mermaid – do not give your voice up for a man! But I do love the songs’, she added.

Earlier this summer Keira, who has struggled with dyslexia since the age of six, revealed that her daughter has also been diagnosed with the condition.

Talking about how she memorises her lines, the actress said: ‘I still find sight-reading really hard.

‘It really bounces [the text] but basically I record it and listen to it, and listen to it, and that’s how I learn it.

‘But now we have a dyslexic kid and she’s doing the same thing, and her memory is absolutely amazing.’

Keira has two daughters and shared insight into the condition, which causes difficulties with reading, writing and spelling.

Speaking on Ruthie’s Table 4 podcast on iHeart Radio, the couple did not specify which child had been diagnosed with the condition, but did say of their daughter: ‘She’ll look at books and would have memorized the book and it’s amazing.’

Keira was recently filming for the new Netflix thriller Black Doves alongside Ben Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire.

Set against the backdrop of London, the upcoming Netflix thriller Black Doves will introduce Keira Knightley’s character, Helen Webb, a quick-witted, down-to-earth, and dedicated wife and mother – who also happens to be a professional spy.

For a decade, Helen has been surreptitiously leaking her politician husband’s secrets to the clandestine organisation she serves, the Black Doves, a revelation that sets the stage for a thrilling narrative.

When her secret lover Jason (Andrew Koji) is assassinated, her spymaster, the enigmatic Reed (Sarah), calls in Helen’s old friend to keep her safe.

Sam Young (Ben) is a suave, champagne-drinking assassin. But having been out of the game since a failed job with disastrous consequences, he’s come home to a London that has moved on without him.

As his past threatens to catch up with him, his task is to protect Helen as she investigates who killed Jason and why.

Together, they set off on a mission that will lead them to uncover a vast, interconnected conspiracy.

One that links the murky underworld of London to a looming geopolitical crisis – and leads them to question the cost of the moral choices they’ve made.

The Netflix series is written by Joe Barton and Keira is listed as an executive producer.

Amid the writers and actors’ January strikes in America, fueled by the studio’s use of AI to replace human actors, Keira revealed that she plans to copyright her face.

She said: ‘At the moment for actresses, the concern is about the voice, and they’re trying to protect the voice-over industry.

‘I don’t know where that’s at but I know that’s the negotiation. But I imagine the next step will be to copyright my face.

‘AI has the potential to be catastrophic and I hope governments come in and regulate it,’ she added.

Studios including the likes of Amazon, Netflix and Apple are proposing to use AI to replace humans with digital scans where an actor’s likeness can be superimposed over a stunt double.Hollywood actors and writers united in their first ‘double strike’ in more than 60 years vowing they will protect every worker in the industry from being replaced by AI.
