LIVELindsay Clancy's mom said she revealed dark thoughts of harming her children weeks before tragic killings

  • Reading time:8 min(s) read

Lindsay Clancy’s mother revealed the former nurse had twisted thoughts of harming her children weeks before she strangled them to death.

The former nurse, 36, is accused of murdering her three children, Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan, at her home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in 2023.

Her mother, Paula Musgrove, recounted a time in December 2022 when Clancy confessed to her and her now ex-husband Patrick, that she had thoughts of harming the children.

Weeks later, Clancy strangled her children with exercise bands and then allegedly attempted to kill herself, but her efforts failed and left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair for life.

The prosecution rested its case against Clancy today after using the first three weeks of the trial to argue the killings were intentional and well planned, not the work of someone who had lost control.

Clancy has admitted to killing her children but pleaded not guilty to murder by reason of insanity, citing postpartum psychosis, and is also suing her former healthcare providers for medical malpractice and negligence.

Clancy confessed to having thoughts of harming the kids, her mother testifies

Paula Musgrove testified that her daughter, Lindsay Clancy, previously told her and Patrick that she had thoughts of harming the kids.

In December 2022, Clancy’s mom told the jury that there was a moment where Clancy said she had to tell her and Patrick something.

She was very nervous, she said. ‘She told us she had thoughts of harming the children,’ she testified.

Musgrove said she began to notice a change in Clancy around October 2022. She added that Clancy did not appear to improve through November and December.

In one text exchange from October, Clancy asked: ‘Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit. I’m really sick.

‘Something is wrong. I had horrible insomnia all night, and I just don’t know how I’m going to get through the day.’

Clancy continued: ‘I started taking the medicine my doctor prescribed for anxiety, and I think it’s made things worse. It’s just really scary, and I don’t want to be alone.’

Paula Musgrove says she was encouraging daughter Lindsay Clancy in text messages

When asked about a message she sent to Clancy on January 22, 2022, saying that it was ‘good to see you doing better,’ Paula said she was trying to encourage her daughter.

‘The texts from me were meant to encourage her because I didn’t think it did any good to discourage her. So the texts were not necessarily what I observed,’ she said.

The texts were ‘not necessarily a representation of what I observed that weekend,’ she said.

‘As a mother I was encouraging her,’ she asserted.

‘If they were there in the text messages then they were sent yes,’ she said, growing somewhat impatient.

She pointed out that she texted her daughter back and forth daily so she doesn’t recall every exact message all the time.

She did not think about having her daughter committed or of having her come to stay with her in Connecticut away from the children.

When asked if she was concerned for the safety of the children at that time, she said: ‘No because I was there.’

What sentence is Lindsay Clancy facing?

Lindsay Clancy is on trial for the murders of her three children, Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan, at her home in Duxbury in January 2023.

She does not deny she killed them, but has pleaded not guilty and claimed she is not responsible for her actions because she was suffering postpartum psychosis after being prescribed a powerful cocktail of drugs to cope with depression.

The prosecution has argued the killings were intentional and well planned, not the work of someone who had lost control.

If convicted of murder, she faces life in prison without parole.

If found not guilty due to a lack of criminal responsibility, she would be committed to a state mental health facility.

Talk about Patrick Clancy has exploded during Lindsay’s murder trial. Now those closest to them share the truth about the grieving dad

Friends and family are rallying to defend Patrick Clancy from vicious conspiracy theories as his ex-wife Lindsay stands trial for murdering their three young children.

The trial, unfolding in Plymouth Superior Court, has captivated the country and stirred an outpouring of public sympathy for Lindsay, a nurse who many now see less as a killer and more as a casualty of a catastrophic mental health collapse.

That sympathy has curdled into baseless suspicion by some aimed at her ex-husband, Patrick, 39, and his new wife, Dr Rachel Danis, 37, whom he married in April this year.

Clancy murder trial discusses suicide

Lindsay Clancy, 36, is accused of murdering her three children – Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan – in January 2023.

Although Clancy does not deny killing her children, she has pleaded not guilty and claimed she is not responsible for her actions because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.

On the day of the killings, Clancy asked her husband, Patrick Clancy, to leave their home to get takeout food and to pick up something at a pharmacy.

Clancy strangled the children with exercise bands, then used multiple methods to try to end her own life.

She was paralyzed after falling from the home’s second-story window and is being held at a state hospital.
